Interview with Ali Tommis
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What song/ artist would you like this part to sound like? Who are your favourite musicians?
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually pop/rock inspired piano parts
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Not playing too many notes, just playing the ones that need to be played to best serve the project
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to think I can really bring out the emotion of what you're creating but also without taking over or creating an over the top part, but instead serving the project.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First & foremost I really want to understand what you want to hear on your track, what artists and songs that you love and would love to hear on your track. That gives me a really clear direction going into creating a great part. Communication is the key.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio Garrtan CFX Concert Grand Keyscape Axe IO audio interface
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: So so many I could write for days. I love the music of Coldplay, OneRepublic, John Mayer, Bruno Mars to name a few. Production wise I love how Charlie Puth is able to produce his music from just the voice notes on his phone, Ryan Tedder is also amazing, the sheer amount of stuff he's written and pruced is phenomenal.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: At the moment it's providing piano tracks for people, whether it be for a purely acoustic track or a piano part that fits into a much larger production.
