Interview with Koen Stroobants
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m making a mix of a musicalproduction I did the livemix for there shows
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I don’t personaly know Antonelli on SoundBetter. But I’m shure there are great sellers out there
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What I think is wrong with there rough mix. I tell them what I think and how it can be fixed.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I listen to all kinds of music, so I know what to do with your songs
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have an all in the box setup. I use ProTools with a lot of plug-ins from diffrent manufacturers (Acustica audio, Waves, UAD, Focusrite, ...) Fore monitors I mainly use Yamaha HS8 and Auratones. But I will allways refference everything on headphones, hifi, ...
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing and mastering songs in all kinds of different genres.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am a live guy. I like going to concerts and mixing live bands. That is also the style I use to mix in the studio.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I’m not making just a loud mix. To me every instrument is equal. The mix has to be in balance to be good.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: That extra spark that makes you say YEAH!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The song Home frome Avec (see music) I mixed and masterd the track. I allso added the string section, the claps and bells just to add that little spark. I’m verry happy with the result.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, in the digital work you can use as much vintage gear on a track as you want. There are just less limitations.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I know I don’t have lots of reviews, but give me a chance and you will be amazed by my work.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Before you buy something, allways contact the person you want to hire. So you can get to know them. And never be afraid of asking something. A good seller will allways make time to answer your questions.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A coffee machine, my computer, my monitors, my headphones and a power generator
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Muse, I think they allways do new stuff on every album. It’s like they invent something new every time.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Allways reference your track with other music and ask other people what they tink about it. A 3th perspective is allways a great reference!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First I listen to the whole song to find out which way it goes. Then its time for a roug mix and when it’s good I’ll go more into detail and automation. When this all is finished I sent to the cliënt.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I only deliver when they are 100% happy with the result!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been a live sound engeneer for over 15 years. This is where I got most of my experience. Over time I got more and more interested in studio work. So now I’m following both my interest and mixing both live and in the studio.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually I work on pop, rock and singer-songwriter music but also on brassband and classical music.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Discovering new talent and helping people.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I like watching tips and trick from everyone, becous I think you can allways learn from someone else.
