Interview with Aylett
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Frances Inguillo. I tend to go to her for Mastering a lot, but she's also a great Mixer & Sound Designer. She's very good at hearing the finer details in things and knowing when something is too much or too little.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I like both. I think digital is a lot more efficient in terms of speed and having more creative options. Analog, however has its own sonic character. I love using analog equipment for designing sounds and it being tactile.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's your vision for this project? What kind of feeling do you want the end product to evoke? Do you have any ideas or references I could listen to? Do you have any specific requests for me?
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Cinematic & Experimental Electronic Music
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually produce futuristic sounding Electronic music combined with some Film & Hip Hop influences.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Creative & unique music production and client communication.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I mainly use Ableton Live and my Dave Smith Tempest to produce music and design sounds. I have lots of different virtual instruments & plugins from companies like Native Instruments, Soundtoys, Fabfilter, Waves, Xfer, etc. I like using Pro Tools when mixing or editing. I have a Shure SM58 Mic & Yamaha MOXF8 Keyboard for when I like to play keys and an AKAI MPK midi controller to program less technical parts. I also have a Steinberg Interface and use Mackie Speakers & Audio Technica ATH-M50x for monitoring.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Bjork and Trent Reznor inspire me a lot with the sounds and atmosphere they create in their music. David Bowie, Aphex Twin, FKA twigs, James Blake - there's a lot.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly end up producing either Hip Hop or Electronic music.
