Interview with Mikhail Talanov
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of my proudest projects was composing music for the film “Project Gemeni”, which was featured under 21st Century Fox. I created an atmospheric and emotional soundtrack that blended orchestral strings with electronic elements, giving the film a deep, immersive feel. My role was composer, arranger and violinist.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m focusing on promoting my latest album, “String Theory”, a fusion of cinematic, neoclassical, and ambient textures. I’m also working on custom soundtracks and violin arrangements for film projects and electronic music collaborations
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: If I find great collaborators here, I’ll be happy to recommend them!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their strengths! Analog brings warmth and character, while digital gives flexibility and precision. I love combining both – using live instruments for organic feel and digital tools for sound design and production
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to create high-quality, emotionally resonant music that aligns perfectly with your vision. Whether it’s a film score, an arrangement, or a violin performance, I’ll put my passion and expertise into making it truly special
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music is pure emotion, and I love being able to shape sound into something that moves people. Whether it’s a deep cinematic score or an intimate violin melody, I love the process of bringing ideas to life and seeing how music connects with listeners
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Can you make my track sound more cinematic and emotional? A: Absolutely! I specialize in blending orchestral depth, ambient textures, and live violin recordings to create immersive, cinematic soundscapes
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people think composing and producing music is just about pressing buttons. In reality, it’s a deep, creative process that involves storytelling, emotion, and technical precision. Also, live violin recording is not just about playing notes – it’s about breathing life into the music
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What emotions or atmosphere do you want the music to create? Do you have reference tracks or artists that inspire your project? What’s the final purpose of the track? (Film, ads, personal use, etc.) What’s your deadline and budget?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear about the mood and emotion you want in your music. Providing references and inspirations helps me craft the perfect sound for your project. Also, trust the creative process – great music comes from collaboration and understanding
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Yamaha Silent Violin – because I can’t imagine life without RME Babyface Pro – compact but delivers high-quality Shure MV7 – for pristine recording quality. Omnisphere – for endless sound design possibilities. MacBook with Logic Pro – to compose wherever I go.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been a professional violinist by 5 and composer for over 10 years. My journey started with classical education in Russia, then evolved into electronic music production and film scoring. Over the years, I’ve worked with brands like Kia, 21st Century Fox, and Raffaello, composing and producing music for commercials, films, and live performances
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a fusion of neoclassical, ambient, and cinematic elements. I blend live violin, piano, and electronic textures to create emotional, immersive soundscapes that work well for film, media, and deep listening experiences
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to collaborate with Ólafur Arnalds or Dustin O'Halloran – their ability to blend classical and modern sounds is incredible, and I resonate deeply with their approach to music
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When composing for cinematic or emotional music, start with silence. Let the space between the notes breathe – this is where the magic happens
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work mainly on cinematic, neoclassical, and ambient music, but also collaborate on electronic and experimental projects
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Blending live violin, electronic production, and cinematic soundscapes into something deeply atmospheric and emotionally engaging
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Emotion and depth. My strength is in combining classical, cinematic, and electronic elements to create something unique. I also bring live violin recordings, which add warmth and organic feel to any track
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. Understanding the client’s vision – discussing emotions, references, and structure 2. Composition & arrangement – building the core of the piece with live instruments and electronic textures 3. Recording & production – adding violin, piano, and ambient elements 4. Mixing & mastering – final polish to make sure everything sounds perfect
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with Yamaha Silent Violin, RME Babyface Pro, Neumann TLM 103, Shure MV7, iLoud Micro Monitors, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Kontakt, Omnisphere, and Arturia V Collection. My setup allows me to create everything from intimate acoustic recordings to full-scale cinematic productions
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m deeply inspired by Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, and Max Richter for their ability to blend classical and electronic elements in a cinematic way
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in cinematic compositions, violin recordings, and full instrumental productions. Many clients come to me for orchestral arrangements, film scores, and electronic-acoustic fusions
