Elvann

Vocalist & Harpist

Elvann on SoundBetter

A soprano with a passion for symphonic metal, carrying her electric harp on her way...

Hey, my name is Elvann! I'm a session musician with a wide variety of professional experience in music performance, recording and writing. I specialize in female vocals for metal and folk projects, but I'm also a trained harpist.

I have obtained my Bachelor degree in music and trained as an opera singer. Since then, I have worked on various music projects ranging from classical to metal as a session musician. My singing style is similar to the one of Tarja Turunen, Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, Dianne van Giersbergen & Sharon Den Adel.

Interview with Elvann

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That the harp is made for angels! I hear it all the time. The harp is more comparable to a manual car: it's physical, challenging, but the satisfaction of "driving" it is a hundred times worth it. (But we have 7 pedals instead of only 3!)

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: Before anything, I always set up a skype conversation with my clients. I find it is very important that we get to know each other a little bit better. I always want to know what kind of music they like and what inspires them. I love to take the time to connect on a musical level so I really understand where they come from. Before I accept to take any client, I first really want to make sure that we connect musically, and I want to be certain that I am the right musician for their need. I think having a similar vision for a creative project absolutely essential: we both need to like each others work. I don't only want to "do my job" and then leave : I want to love the final result just as much as you will yourself.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I usually record myself with Rode NT1-A Mircophones. They have such a clear sound, I just love them and I love how they render my voice. I also use the same microphone for my harp.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Since I was 12 I was inspired by Tarja turunen, the first Nightiwsh singer. She's actually the reason why I got into music in the first place, and ended with a Bachelor Degree in Music. Since then, I have discovered many different bands that I take inspiration from like Epica and Within Temptation, but my first love will always remain Nightwish. Apart from musical inspiration, I'm also very inspired by writters like H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Alan Poe, Shaekspear, Tolkien and Charles Baudelaire. I like the universe into which these writers dive us in, and they are a great inspiration for me when I write lyrics for my songs.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: More than anything, I think I'm an "idea-sharer". I mean by this, whatever I'm asked to do, may it be vocals, harp or orchestral arrangements, the core of what I work on is creative ideas. I like to work with clear concepts, images and ideas in mind. I like to share them and create a piece of music that's unique with my clients. I like to be thrown away from my comfort zone, try new things and work on the kind I never expected I would do.
