Teiva Viaris on SoundBetter

Tahiti-born multi instrumentalist, music composer and audio producer with a unique set of cultural influences and a passion for vintage synths.

My name is Teiva. I've been professionally playing, composing and recording music for more than 10 years, following a 12-year classical piano training and an academic education to computer-assisted music in the south of France. My expert skills spread across both the artistic (Composing, Arranging) and technical (Recording, Mixing, Mastering) fields of music producing.

My personal tastes lean towards indie, folk, lofi & electro music.

I feel comfortable taking on projects at any stage of development, be it a rough musical idea recorded on the fly with your phone, an on-going composition in need of arrangement/enhanced production, or a completed title waiting for a final mastering touch.

I am, since 2018, the founder and owner of the "Third Fish", a professional recording studio built to my own designs, here in my island home of Tahiti. Every one of my clients is therefore in right to expect, in addition to my total devotion to their artistic vision, industry standard results in terms of audio quality ...with an added bonus of island magic!

Interview with Teiva Viaris

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: I'd love to work with Stephen Wilkinson aka Bibio. To me he is one of the very few artist who is as impressive behind a guitar and a mic, as he is behind a studio desk. He masters the sound chain from A to Z.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: EQ and Pan your Reverbs.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: I usually work with pop song artists, which represent the largest part of the local market, but my geographical situation also allows me to work for traditional Polynesian dance groups and percussive bands, which is really interesting from an artistic perspective.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: I have a very acute Ear. Ultimately, as a producer, it is the only real tool you need.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I bring a unique multicultural background, which often leads to very creative and original musical ideas when confronted with western musical culture. In addition to that, I developed a rare expertise in vintage instrumentation and recording equipment which often offer unique production options and really allow my songs to stand out from the pack in the international indie/pop music scene.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: Workflow usually goes as is: 1. First contact: I get to know the client, he gets to know me. 2. Detailled depiction of the client's needs: by email, preferably. 3. Creative discussion including references. 4. First Proposal (within 2 to 3 working days). 5. Notes/Revision. 6. Finishing/Final Mix. In any case, the starting point AND the final objective of every project I carry on resides in the client's vison.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I designed my studio so as to switch easily between my two main activities (ie band recording and music composing). It is a one-room, 40 square meters studio with 3 areas dedicated to 3 main instrument families (Drum/Percs, Strings/Guitars and Keys) and a control desk rigged with analog preamps, equalizers and dynamic processors.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: MGMT's first albums are a great source of inspiration, production-wise AND music-wise. I also have a profound love for french touch and euro electro bands like "Air" or "Bonobo".

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: My main activity, as a recording studio owner, consists of recording and producing local bands. But I also engage regularly in film scoring and trailer music composing. Recent works include hollywood-based production such as "7 days to Vegas" (international trailer) and "Greenlight".
