I believe that sound quality is not objective. Different sounds have different characters and elicit different emotions, just as much as different notes and rhythms and lyrics. This is why it is so important that recordings not only sound "professional" but fit the artistic integrity of the music.
I don't work like most recording studios. I have no interest in sticking up the same microphones every time in front of any artist who comes in the door, with no prior idea of how their music sounds and feels, and making everything sound "punchy" and "fat". What I want to do is help make great music, by recording sounds that suit and enhance your unique artistic vision.
As a creative musician and collaborative writer and improviser myself, I am uniquely placed as a recording engineer to understand and do justice to your music.
Mixing can make or break the mood of a record, which is why there should still be a collaborative element. Once I have worked on the more technical elements, I like to have an attended mixing session with artists. This helps to avoid endless drafts and emails back and forth trying to describe subtle changes that are so hard to put into words, a process we have all experienced at some point. There is no reason for mixing to be like this, especially when the process leading up to it has been done right. I am more than happy to experiment with weird and wacky effects, or keep things completely natural and true to source. As always this comes down to whatever suits the music - the song always comes first!
