Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The gold record with Dance Gavin Dance. I was a fan of the band in my teens, when we met they were at a low ebb and the record we made Instant Gratifications started a new cycle that saw them reach new highs. I was assisting Kristofer Crummett on engineering, reamping, editing, mixing and mastering that project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A country record with US musicians and a few singles with metalcore french sensation.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, my colleague Lucas D'Angelo
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can we make it louder? Yes, we can!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I want to blow you away.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like working on hundreds of songs and so diverse. Never a dull dya.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I'm not a AI.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about the meaning of the song and also what they are trying to achieve with the release of said song.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Choices have to be made, we can't build on moving sand. Be organized with a clear vision so we can build on it and create something even more spectacular.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Mac book pro M3 Neumann M48 SM7b Chandler TG2 Audeze MM500
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing in bands 20 years ago, we went to a local studio to record a demo and I caught the bug. Recording my own bands during my teen years and then interning at studios while pursuing my master degree in audio engineering in France which lead to an opportunity to assist orchestral sessions in the big old school studios (SSL 9000 XL). 10 years ago I moved to the US to assist producer Kristofer Crummett on bands like Dance Gavin Dance, Issues, Memphis May Fire. Came back to Europe and work with great producers Henrik Udd (Architects, Betraying The Martyrs), Lucas D'Angelo (Alien Ant Farm, Betraying The Martyrs, Grey Daze).
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I think it's both powerful and polished.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Probably some Foo Fighters, I feel like I would destroy the mix.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: There are time for experimenting but when working on projects it should go fast. It's a way to make better decision for the art.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have better dad jokes than my father.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring life to a song!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the song first to make sure I feel I'm the best for the job. Then I will do a first path and compare it to the rough to see if I'm going in the right direction, some more tweaking and then listen to reference track. When I'm happy with my take on the mix I'll send it to the artist. Last step is usually a stream live where we finalize the track and tackle all of the artist notes.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, I like to record with great analog equipment when possible, tube and transformer juice on the way in and then I mix in the box for the precision of digital tools.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Most of my biggest records have been with Post-Hardcore and Metalcore artists.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is all connected for remote work so I can team up with artists from all over the world. It's built on one of the new very powerful mac arm computers with top converters from Merging and boutique tube gear from Tree Audio. + hundreds of plugins and instruments, I try to stay on top of software development collaborating with brands like Avid, iZotope, Slate Digitalc etc.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: That's a very long list! I'm a music lover (of all sort). I try to bring my pop and modern sensibility in the world of alternative rock and metal bands blending genres and techniques. My first loves 20 years ago was with all the emo scene, then post-hardcore and metal a lot of them produced by the one and only John Feldmann. My Chemical Romance, The Used, Story of the Year, Escape The Fate, Bring Me The Horizon, Sleeping With Sirens, Panic! at the Disco, etc
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I help artists and producers finish their songs. Usually it's in the form of mixing the song and bringing it to the finish line.
