Jaye Locke on SoundBetter

Hi! I'm a producer based in Los Angeles. I specialize in R&B and Pop. I've traveled the world for over 10 years playing with several major artists. Along the way I discovered that I have a knack for helping other artists achieve their vision for their music.

I genuinely just love music. It's what I've done every single day since I was a kid, and it's most of what I think about every day. It's taken me around the world to so many amazing places, and recently it's allowed me to connect with countless talented artists as a producer.

I feel that my superpower is my background as a musician. I came up playing keys, bass, guitar, and strings, so I tend to favor production that has a lot of real instruments. Loops definitely have their place, but I feel like my niche is making more live sounding records.

I believe in the power of collaboration. I want to work WITH you on your music. For everyone I work with, I schedule a zoom call to find out more about what you need and to really understand the vision for your record. I put all of me into every song I produce. I want to make music that matters and reaches as many people as possible.

I never want budget to be an inhibiting factor. If my production rate is a bit steep for you, I'm open to working out a combination of royalty split/fee that works for both of us, depending on the situation. Let's chat about it!

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

I was SO LUCKY to find Jaye for my project! I wanted an R&B production with real instruments, not just computerized loops. And Jaye is a highly skilled multi instrumentalist as well as a loop arranger. He was the perfect fit for my project.

He brought a human feel to the groove which I was looking for. Jaye also shared ideas for the arrangement which made the final track even better. And he did all this with patience and a positive attitude.

I'll be working with Jaye again!

Jaye is an incredible player. Not only can he flawlessly execute parts during live performances, but his ingenuity in the studio is unparalleled. I had he opportunity to work with him on several occasions and was blown away with his attention to detail and precise playing. His bass parts that he wrote brought the entire track together, and his synth parts are absolute butter. If you can book him, you won't be disappointed!

Interview with Jaye Locke

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: TJ Routon and Ryan Short are great mixing engineers I use often.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: I'd love to work with Victoria Monét. I think she's one of the best R&B singers out right now. When she released her quarantine acapella I made a version you can listen to here: https://soundcloud.com/jayelocke/pull-up-victoria-monet

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: I'd say treat everything like it might be on the final production. I try to make everything perfect at each stage rather than thinking of anything as a "demo." I've had instances where the very first thing an artist sang into the mic became the final vocal. Just make sure all your shit is always on 100.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I work on R&B, Soul, and Pop.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My ear and my skill as a musician. Coming from a background of being a professional touring and session multi-instrumentalist has really helped me carve out a niche for myself as a producer. I still use a lot of samples but it's easy for me to play out any idea I have whether it's on keys, guitar, or bass.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Music is my life, it's everything to me. I feel like it's what I was born to do and I'm extremely dedicated to making everything I touch the best it can be. I would never take a project if I didn't think I was the right fit for it. I'm very good at understanding an artists vision and bringing it to life, within the genres that I specialize in.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I like to have a chat via facetime/zoom etc before starting work and really try to understand an artist's vision for their song or project. After we get on the same page, I'll get the demo stems from an artist, and from there I'll completely produce out the track. From there I'll send to the artist and we'll go back and forth fine-tuning the production. After the music is complete, we can discuss vocal production, and the artist can track the final vocals. I do vocal production as well as comping/tuning, so I like to be involved in that stage of the production as well.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I am first and foremost a musician, so my setup reflects that. In a genre dominated by of loops and samples, I still play a lot of the music from scratch on records I produce, so I have a number of Keyboards, Guitars, and Basses ready to go. I started in Logic but now I primarily produce in Ableton. In the case the we are doing an in-person session (I'm based in LA), then I have a selection of vocal mics including a TLM 102, Aston Origin, and SM7b.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I look up to producers like Pharell, Mustard, Wondagirl, and Calvin Harris, anyone who has a distinct and innovative sound.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I'm a songwriter as well as a producer, so I'd say my time at the moment is split between the two. However, specifically on soundbetter, I'm most commonly taking fully written demos and helping artists realize them as finished productions.
