I've had the blessed fortune of working with Allie many times over the last 4 years. She has a unique blend of talents that bring a fresh, fierce authenticity to the projects we get into together. Interview with Allie Farris

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: In January 2020, my song that I co-wrote and sang with artist K.S. Rhoads was selected to be on the Grey's Anatomy/Station 19 season premiere. It was one of the proudest moments of my life.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Many different things, including a Christmas Song, a full album for a client, and a children's YouTube series.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: We haven't met, but https://soundbetter.com/profiles/243732-sebastien Sebastien is in Lausanne as well and is a great guitarist!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, because why choose? I love analog sound, but going digital has its own advantages. I know that's a nothing answer, but I'm just trying to write and sing good songs so they sound good no matter what.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will do my absolute best job for you.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that it changes every day, while still coming from the same creative vein. It feels like a brand new job with each new project, and a new chance to learn something.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "Is it weird to describe how I want it to sound like that (i.e. 'fluffy', 'excited, but scared!')? Do you understand?" Nope, not at all, and I absolutely do!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's not just a regular job like any other. It's important to approach artistic work with the same dedication and ritual as a 9-to-5.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who are your influences creatively? Which artists do you admire and find inspirational, and why?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know your end goal, and we will work together to get there!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Inexhaustible pen and paper, acoustic piano, pitch fork, piano tuning lever (I am a technician), and felts for muting the piano.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing this since I was 14; music was the only thing that I've ever wanted to do because it was the only thing I felt like I could connect to the world with. It has been my chosen way of communicating throughout my entire life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Very honest, fluctuating; someone who follows the rules of songwriting until I suddenly don't.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would be honored to work with Ben Folds or Rufus Wainwright, as they are both huge creative inspirations for me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The mix and the choices made with instrumentation should always reflect the story told by the song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Singer/Songwriter, country, alternative rock, jazz, and recently EDM.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say that I am an extremely good songwriter. I can musically realize any idea or inspiration that my client may have.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My own creative voice, molded over 15 years of trial-by-error singing, songwriting, and live performance experience, and backed up by many national songwriting prizes (Newsong, Rocky Mountain Folks, Telluride, etc.).
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on the job, I will be at my desk at 9am and be working to about 6-7pm, whether it is recording, editing, writing, or corresponding.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record on a Shure SM7B into an Apollo Twin, a setup I've been using for years, and I work on the latest version of ProTools.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am very inspired by industry legends like Jeff Lynne, songwriting giants like Tom Petty and Harry Nilsson, and creative innovators like Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most commonly, I am either the lead vocalist and/or background vocalist for someone's project, or I am the lyric writer/songwriter for a client. I am also a pianist for hire and have been so many times.
