I improvise soulful hooks on Broadway that people quote to me years later. I sound like Stevie meets James Taylor meets D’Angelo meets Kurt Elling, maybe?

SOME FANCY CREDENTIALS:

As a singer, I’ve done hundreds of shows on Broadway and around the world, sung at the TONY awards, sung with Big Bird and Elmo at the Sesame Street Gala, sung to Jerry Rice on ESPN, and done dozens of studio sessions singing hooks for other artists and demoing songs for production studios.

As a writer, I’ve worked with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Immortal Technique, and James Monroe Iglehart offstage, and I’ve been writing songs live onstage with my Grammy-nominated, Tony-winning group Freestyle Love Supreme for almost 20 years.

THE WRITING:

I just love writing catchy melodies. And harmonies. And countermelodies. I’m at my best in the R&B/soul/pop world, but I’ve written my share of singer-songwriter stuff as well. I produce my own music, so I can get you anything from solo vocal/piano to a fully fleshed-out production.

THE SINGING:

If you want a huge voice, I’m probably not your guy. But if you need someone to break your heart on a ballad, or turn a groove upside down, contact me. I’ve been producing for 20 years, so I can get you the sound you need, whether that’s raw unmixed vocals from my treated room, or tuned/aligned/processed.

WORKING WITH ME:

My main priority is clear communication — I work to make sure we're on the same page so you can get the sound you want. If you're not sure what that is, I can help you figure it out.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Arthur did a wonderful job providing vocals for my track! He really took care to understand the song and what I wanted. He came up with arrangements and vocal harmonies that really enriched the song, and his performance was truly soulful.

I have worked with Arthur Lewis and been a fan of his work for more than a decade. He is one of the most professional artists I have ever worked with and honestly he has written some of the coolest jams I have on my playlist.

Arthur is an incredible singer and his song writing is just fantastic. His vocal arrangements are wonderful to hear and really fun to sing. I honestly can’t say enough good things about Arthur Lewis.

From arranging and singing vocal harmonies, to creating beats, pinpointing the perfect chord voicing, underlining rhythmic nuance, to improvising melodic connectors, Arthur’s creativity and bag of techniques seems endless. But working with Arthur is such a blessing because he also tunes into to what you are trying to do or say with your own musical ideas, and uses his powers to strengthen and build up your ideas from the inside. I’ve never met anyone else with that combination of musicianship and generous sensitivity.

Arthur was professional and a pleasure to work with. He asked great questions to get clear on what I was looking for and was gracious about taking feedback. The finished product was exactly what I was hoping for.

I have been lucky enough to work with Arthur on several projects throughout the years, from commercial topline vocal recording to co-writing production music tracks, and even was lucky enough to produce a single for him called "Hello Love," where he was able to showcase many of his talents at once — as songwriter, as co-producer, as beat maker and programmer, as keyboardist, and especially as vocalist and arranger. He is the real deal on all these fronts, and working with him will make your music sound better!!

Interview with Arthur Lewis

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: There are three that come up most often. 1. Sing this thing I’ve already written. This is often either a full song for a media pitch, or a hook for a rap song. 2. Help me write this song. Someone will come to me with a topline, or rap lyrics, or pieces of a song, and ask me to help them fill out the rest. This can go anywhere from suggesting chords under their melody to writing new sections to the song to building out the whole song and producing. 3. Write something new. This might be a full song or just a hook and chords for MCs to freestyle over.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: Custom-built vocal booth, Nord Grand, Fender Telecaster, Guild acoustic guitar, Logic Pro X, Komplete 13, Soundtoys 5 bundle, various MIDI controllers and percussion instruments

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: The Beatles, Prince, Queen, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Buckley, Max Martin, D'Angelo, Soulquarians, Radiohead, Emily King, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Yebba, Moses Sumney

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Don't worry too much about credentials. Listen to the examples, communicate with the person, and make sure it clicks. Just because someone is a pro doesn't always mean they're the right person for *your* music.
