Interview with Tylr Rydr
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Ashnikko - Special. I discovered Ash when she had only 2k followers and was blown away. She was my dream artist to work with. I hit her up, got straight in the studio and got the first single off her EP 'Hi, It's Me'. She then blew up like crazy! It was such an honour to have been able to work with an artist I'm a genuine superfan of, and to have helped her go from 15k monthly listeners to 2 and a half million!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: For the most part digital; it's insane what DAWs, especially Ableton, can do nowadays. I still have a soft spot for analogue tho (I love running things through guitar amps to grit it up)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'm gonna take your ideas and turn it into something we can both be proud of
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I've got to travel the world doing what I love every day. I've somehow managed to never work a day of a 'real' job in my life
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can we combine these two totally unrelated things? Yes, of course we can!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that there are any rules to follow; we're all making this up as we go along haha
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How do they want to be perceived as an artist What are their favourite songs What are their career goals
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Send me as many references and you can, invite me into your world, share what inspires you so I can get on in your head
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook (of course) SE2300 mic (this mic is perfect for EVERYTHING!) Electric guitar (I have a vintage Westone from the Matsumoko factory that I have modded) Ableton Push (this thing takes Ableton to a whole new level, I use it both live and in the studio) Focusrite Clarret 8Pre (this interface is rock solid and has never let me, and the pre amps in it are so clean!)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been making music since forever, but my first big break cam last year when I produced Special by Ashnikko. Since then I've been lucky enough to a part of plenty major label releases where I've been able to blur the lines between the pop and underground worlds. I also DJ, and this has let me see the world
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Energetic and left field
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: It's got to be Kanye - he has this incredible skill of combining people who you think would never fit together and somehow making it work
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: STOP OVERTHINKING!!!!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I'm super versatile. Most records I work on will be a blend of urban, rock, dance and pop depend who I'm working with
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Understanding exactly what my collaborator wants while still throwing in the odd curve ball to push the envelope
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Left field / out there sound design mixed with more mainstream arrangement to put tracks in that grey area between alternative innovation and pop sensibility. I'm also a wizard when it comes to vocal editing / processing
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends what role I'm taking (whether I'm making the beat, engineering vocal or mixing/mastering) but my first step is to get in my collaborators head. I love getting sent reference tracks, but I love getting sent weird things like pictures; I have synesthesia, so visuals can inspire me just as much as songs! Step two will be to get together a rough demo together, before getting feedback; I like getting lots of feedback so I stay in the lane of what the collaborator is looking for. I'm so versatile that if I don't get regular feedback I might take the track in the wrong direction ahaha
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run off Ableton with a variety of outboard amps and pedals i've accumalted over the years
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love how Diplo is able to work in so many different genres and still have sonic threads that run throughout. He also stays ahead of the curve and is a trendsetter, not a follower
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Beat making, production, vocal engineering, songwriting, mixing and mastering
