Interview with Vian Izak
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My first album, Northern Anthems, was recorded on Music Row in Nashville and combines a comic book story with heartfelt music. The album has gone on to be nominated for 2 Independent Music Awards and gained over 50 million streams online. I self produced and mixed it.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am always working on productions for my own artist project, for artists on my label, and on new side projects.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I know many session musicians and producers here in Nashville. Many of them are on Soundbetter. If the reviews look good then I'd recommend them. Soundbetter does a good job of vetting creators.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is simple — I’ll treat your song like it’s my own. I know how much heart, time, and vulnerability goes into creating music. My job is to take that seriously and serve your vision with excellence, creativity, and care. You can expect clear communication, attention to detail, and a collaborative process built around making your voice and story shine. I’m not here to put my sound on your song — I’m here to help you create something honest, beautiful, and built to last.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is helping artists bring their vision to life. Every artist has a unique voice and story — my role is to come alongside that and build a world around it. There’s something really special about taking a raw idea — sometimes just a voice memo or a lyric — and shaping it into something beautiful, polished, and true to the artist. For me, production isn’t about showing off what I can do — it’s about creating space for the artist’s voice to shine and making sure the heart of the song comes through in a way that connects with listeners.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Question: "Can I send you a rough demo, or does it need to be fully produced before we work together?" My Answer: Absolutely — I actually prefer starting with a simple demo. It can be a voice memo from your phone or a rough acoustic version — that’s totally fine. My process is built around serving the vocal and the story first. Once I have your demo, I’ll create a guide track (usually piano or guitar) for you to record your final vocals to. From there, I build the full production around your vocal performance — adding real instruments, creative sound design, and everything the song needs to feel finished and emotionally resonant. The most important thing is having a clear vision of where you want the song to go sonically. References really help me understand your taste and goals so I can deliver something that feels true to you.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always start by asking a few key questions to make sure we’re aligned creatively and practically: What’s the story or emotion you want this song to communicate? What artists or songs do you see this living next to sonically? (References are huge for me.) What’s your vision for the final product — is this for streaming, sync, live performance, or something else? Do you have a clear vocal recording plan in place, or do you need help finding a studio locally? What’s your timeline and budget expectations? I’ve found that the more clarity we have up front, the more creative freedom we’ll have later in the process. My best work happens when an artist knows who they are and what they want — then I can focus fully on bringing that vision to life.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been working full time in music since 2014. I run my own record label and artist project so I am involved in all aspects of the business. Anyone who works with me will get the benefit of learning not only how to create stellar tracks but how to get them out into the world in a meaningful way.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I serve the vocal and the melody. That is ultimately the goal of a production. Whether it's a simple piano vocal only track or a dense symphonic pop banger, what you'll get from working with me is an ear that will make the main thing shine.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Coldplay. For me that have been able to consistently put out heartfelt emotional music that is commercially successful.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less can often be more. Really ask yourself what the purpose of each element in a mix is. Often I hear productions that are struggling not because they are missing something but rather because they have competing elements that are not working towards a unifying whole.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Singer Songwriter, Pop, Folk
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a producer’s ear — but also an artist’s heart. With over 500 million streams credited across projects I’ve worked on, and my own artist project reaching over 100 million streams, I understand both the creative and commercial sides of music. As a producer, my job is to take what you’re already feeling and elevate it — to build a world around your vocal that feels emotionally honest but also built for today’s listeners. My background includes working with artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Davide Rossi (Coldplay), The Arcadian Wild, and COIN, and my productions have landed on hundreds of editorial playlists and in dozens of TV/Film placements. I lean into organic instrumentation, subtle detail, and dynamic arrangements that leave space for the story to breathe. Whether it’s a stripped-back folk song or a cinematic pop production, my goal is always to create something timeless and deeply personal to you as the artist.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process is built around serving the vocal and the story of the song. I like to start with a pre-production Zoom call where we’ll talk through your vision, references, and goals for the track. From there, I’ll create a simple piano or guitar guide track for you to record final vocals to — wherever you’re most comfortable. Once I have the vocal stems, I’ll comp, tune, and process them to sit naturally in the mix. Then I build the production around your vocal — layering real instruments from my studio like piano, Rhodes, guitars, and organic textures to support the emotion of your performance. I’ll send over a rough mix for feedback, we’ll go through a couple rounds of revisions, and then I’ll deliver the final mix and stems ready for release. My goal is always to create a track that feels timeless, honest, and uniquely you. I usually lay down a demo vocal over some chords for artists to play along to. We then take the time to make sure each element in the recording fits. Once we're done constructing/recording the song I will take a day or so to edit the track (time align/vocal tuning/ etc). I will then send an edited track to artist to approve. Once approved I set aside a day to mix the track. I'll usually sit on a mix over night and listen again the next day and make adjustments if needed. I will then send to artist for approval. Once approved I'll master it. Artist has control every step of the way. I am here to make your vision come to life!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is designed to blend the best of both worlds — high-end analog gear with modern digital flexibility. I work primarily in Logic Pro using Universal Audio’s Apollo interface and 4-710d preamps for tracking, along with a curated collection of UAD analog emulation plugins for mixing. What really sets my space apart is the collection of real instruments I use to bring productions to life — a Boston Steinway upright piano, Rhodes 54-key electric piano, Peavey T60 electric guitar, Korg Monologue synth, and a variety of unique acoustic instruments like bowed psaltery, mandolin, and cigar box guitar. This setup allows me to build productions that feel organic, textured, and emotionally real — while still being mix-ready for modern streaming or sync placement.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly produce tracks and mix. I also love to co write if an artists needs help shaping the song. Typically I create songs that get released and then gain hundred of thousands if not millions of streams, so I take great care to make sure each track has hit potential.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Why do you have to choose? Use what makes sense in the moment.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to my previous work and see if I'm a good fit. Have a plan or vision as much as possible.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Production and songwriting.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, Ryan Tedder, Michael Brauer
