Interview with Zachary Larson Guitarist
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The original cast recording of the musical The Magnificent Seven. I was the guitarist (electric) on each track. After a successful run of the show in NYC, we recorded the album with the Grammy-winning recording engineer John Kilgore at his studio in Manhattan. Everything went so smoothly, and the guitars were sounding fantastic. It was definitely a highlight for me.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I only play nylon strings! Although I am classically trained, I am always working on electric and acoustic guitar projects.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Musical Theater, Soundtracks, and classical-style works.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I just finished a cool project with Stew-Mac guitars in Athens, Ohio. We built and recorded some tunes on their new Body-Build Acoustic Guitars. Check the out the video on Youtube!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have always been a musician, playing brass instruments and piano growing up, and then moving on to guitar when I was 13. I auditioned and completed 2 degrees in guitar performance and have since toured the world playing classical, broadway, and sideman-style gigs.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: The first step is to always listen and internalize the music provided by the client. What follows is usually learning the parts, making any adjustments needed, and then recording. I like to send parts to clients very quickly just in case we need to make any more adjustments before delivering the final product.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Frequent communication and clear responses are something I always strive for, and greatly appreciate it when a provider does the same
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The Cuban-born classical guitarist Ricardo Iznaola. He is a true example of excellence in everything he does, and he does everything in the biz.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Arranging and recording a client's piece of music to be played on classical/nylon guitars. I am also frequently asked to provide Spanish sounding solos and lead guitar to existing tracks.
