Interview with J.Miguel - Razante,The Twelves
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic, indie rock, pop, experimental, music for ads and films in general (various genres).
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Originality, commitment, attention to details, craft, knowledge, experience, understanding what the client needs, ability to learn something new if needed, like 3d/360º audio, binaural sounds, VR mixing, for example.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Life, warmth, unique sounds, space, atmosphere, originality, freshness, sonic coherence and harmonization. I can also offer to dismantle a song to create a new structure or parts if I feel the song needs it.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. If I'm remixing, I take the vocals and create a new instrumental for it. 2. For advertising, I first do a meeting to understand the client demand, I come out with music references and create an original track based on what they ask for / film needs. 3. If I'm producing an artist, I work with them very closely sharing most steps of the process.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Depending on the project, I can remake your track from scratch. In most remixes I did for The Twelves, I mainly used the original vocals and created a totally new instrumental version to go along with it. I avoided listening to the original track so I could keep my ideas fresh detached from the original song. I also work a lot with sound design / SFX, sound restoration/treatment for films and ads.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. You have to mess around with both for a while to understand how they differ from each other. Analog synth sounds will always sound better to me if you compare to the same digital version of the instrument. There is something about the voltage that brings life and warmth to a sound that the digital domain can't really fully recreate. The digital world can be too sterile. But I believe in the combination of the two. There are a lot of things you can do in digital that you can't recreate in analog. Also, in digital, there's the instant recall if you need to open an old project. There are also lots of plugins so true to the real thing that most people won't notice the difference. The Universal Audio plugins are the best example of that.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have more than 20 years of experience creating and producing music and audio in general. I'm always learning new technics and searching for new unique sounds.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently produced this track for the portuguese Red Cross campaign about the pandemic/quarentine times we are living in right now. I'm really glad I could take part of this job and I really liked the result. It's meant to bring peace and hope to the people that are going crazy staying at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh90kUSWAqo
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Apart from still working with advertising, I'm about to release a new electronic project which kinda resumes where The Twelves was left off.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Commitment, professionalism, attention to details, good experience at meeting deadlines.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That every project is a new challenge. It's always a new experience, with different people, different demands and with different results. You always learn from every project.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Study, watch tutorials and read books. Then forget everything you learnt and go experiment as if there are no rules. Being original is a lot of not following the rules sometimes.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm a partner of one of the biggest audio companies in Brazil called SONIDO. The house I work with has 3 floors with four acoustically treated studios made by professionals. Lots and lots of equipments, instruments and microphones.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The people behind these bands: Radiohead, Weval, Tame Impala, Chemical Brothers, Connan Mockasin, Daft Punk, Disclosure, MGMT, Siriusmo, Thom Yorke, Toro y Moi, Beatles, Jacco Gardner, Justice, Metronomy, Soft Hair, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Franz Ferdinand.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I really like to know the reasons behind the demands.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: That they can expect professionalism, commitment and that I can remake what they ask for until everyone is 100% satisfied.
