Interview with Feraner
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Of course, there are many names I can recommend, but this is a relationship, and both parties must understand what they want and work together to build this relationship.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Our starting point is analog, but the path we are on is digital. To get the maximum benefit from both for our advantage.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To work patiently and with full performance, prioritizing you completely, to create a final product that satisfies you, and to add a collaboration to our careers that we can both be proud of.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: To create, to discover new things, and to get inspired.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How do we reach the top by doing just one job? I believe it is a journey. Even if we are not aware, those who reach the top have experienced many defeats, comebacks, and immense effort. Step by step, to make a single-story building visible in a city skyline, we must elevate it floor by floor with a solid foundation and progress with patience.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The belief that something new can be created with the thought of wanting to do something new. Because whatever we do, we benefit from the legacy passed on by those before us and can only change its method and/or process.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: what you want, in which style, and whom you want your music to sound like. What are your most listened-to and favorite genres, artists, albums, and playlists?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Please decide what you want, in which style, and whom you want your music to sound like. After that, hire an expert who has previously produced this kind of work, can guide you completely, and has good communication skills to satisfy your needs.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My computer, Ableton Live, VU meter, my headphones, and Realphones 2.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started music in high school by playing guitar and drums. Later, from 2006 onwards, I performed regularly at prominent venues in Istanbul and Ankara with my bands, where I was the vocalist and songwriter. I also performed at university festivals and other events. Since 2010, we have worked on singles and albums. Subsequently, I moved into the production side of things and have been working in music production and sound engineering since 2012.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Organic, emotional, and unique.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Someone who knows what they want, has correctly assessed and chosen you based on your production background, and allows you to take the lead. Someone who knows what they want, has correctly assessed and chosen you based on your production background, and allows you to take the lead.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: First and foremost, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Find the right reference that suits the style, and let it be something you love and listen to the most!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: At the top, electronic music and its subgenres. To elaborate, I can say the subgenres of house and hip-hop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My diligence and openness to innovation.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Firstly, I fully reflect on the genre of the song and what the artist wants in the project. However, I always aim to incorporate my signature sound and small, emotional, and deep touches, like adding spice and drawing from the multiple cultures that inspire me.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually start by creating the chorus of the song. However, depending on the genre of the song, I either base the project on melodies or drums.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: While moving from Turkey to Montenegro, I conducted 2-3 years of research to achieve full efficiency with a more mobile and “in the box” setup. However, I currently have my own production company and a professional recording and rehearsal studio in Podgorica.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: come from a country with a newly discovered, deeply rooted culture that forms the basis of civilization, such as Turkey. My art is nourished by great names like Yunus Emre, Fuzuli, and Karacaoğlan, who are rich in philosophy, literature, spirituality, and art. On top of that, I spent my childhood with figures like Barış Manço, Erkin Koray, Cem Karaca, Moğollar, and Selda Bağcan, who gathered under the historical Anatolian Rock umbrella. With the contribution of my family, I grew up with both global genres like Rock/Funk/Soul and traditional Turkish folk music and Turkish classical music. My musical journey, which started with Rock music in my youth, progressed through different paths like funk and rap. Eventually, electronic music became the main element defining my musical identity. Under this umbrella, I can say that I found myself in subcultures of genres like hip-hop and house.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: have been performing music since 2006 and working in music studios since 2012. I have worked for many years as a recording engineer, production assistant, and sound editor on commercial music, TV/film scores, and album productions. Since 2014, I have also been working freelance, producing songs and albums for advertising agencies and almost all genres.
