Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: A song written on the spot and recorded live through the board directly into an old Alesis ADAT machine.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A band project with my son and brothers.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, I'm still new to this site.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog! Just listen and you will hear the difference.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: If you are not satisfied with my work, I will refund your money, provided that you remove my tracks from your project.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love creating new sounds.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you play it just like this? I will get as close as I can, but it's still going to sound like me.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's easy, it is actually very difficult.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What would you like to hear? How does it sound in your mind?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be very specific, don't be afraid to tell the musicians when you hear something that doesn't sound right to you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Hamer Monaco, My Les Paul, My Acoustic, My Zelinsky Tagliare, And my little Blackstar Fly 3 with a years supply of batteries.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I always wanted to be a musician since childhood, started guitar lessons at age 8. I started playing guitar in front of an audience since age 14 and then started singing at around age 19. So I've been doing this for about 42 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: 50's, 60's and 70's Rock and Roll.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Iggy Pop, Because he's an incredible songwriter. With great lyrics and a definite idea of song structure, it's easy to add instrumental parts.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more, keep it simple.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Punk, Surf, Heavy rock, Blues, Prog Rock, Alt Country, and Folk.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: To tune out the outside world and dial in to the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Emotions, Sonic colours, Sonic flavors.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Listen, feel, play. Then listen to the playback, Do overdubs / edits, or if it doesn't sound or feel right, Listen, feel, and play again.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Direct into an Avid Eleven Rack into Mixcraft Pro Studio 9. Or if the situation is right, I will mic a tube amp and run it into my mixer and then feed that into an ADAT onto 16 Bit Tape.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Guitars, Backing Vocals.
