Interview with Bryan Czap

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Helping

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: whats my rate. my rate is whatever the client needs it to be. just remember that a bigger budget means more time and effort can be spent on it. but not everything needs tons of time.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: dont hire people you dont trust fully. a producer you are hiring should be more experienced than you so you trust their opinion and hear their suggestions but not so out of your league that are you are afraid to challenge them and push for what you want.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: started in through school as a drummer played in bands with friends as well as in marching and jazz bands. switched to guitar which I was self taught and naturally good at and formed my first successful band and continued to play guitar in 2 more bands. I had briefly gone to recording school so always had that as an interest and always had recording equipment. most of my music interests were due to my dad always switching hobbies. eventually started recording my own bands to save money and get results that were more aligned with what I was hearing in my head. and then started doing the same for others. and thats been about a 26 year journey.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: keep it simple. don't overthink. but also dont be afraid to push the envelope to hear. sometimes less is more. 1 great sound is better than 5 mediocre ones stacked on one another.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I have such a big catalog of music that i love and it always tends to be the producers of those records that really inspire me. I always refer to nirvana producers Butch Vig and Steve Albini. 2 great producers who had 2 polar opposite approaches to recording their own music same band and both came out with insanely good results. I believe there is a time and place to either really dial in a bands sound and put them in a larger than life wall of sound as did Butch Vig; but there is also a time and place to put the band in a room with their instruments and proper microphones and just press record and get out of the way as Steve Albini often explains.
