Johnny did outstanding work taking my song to another level. He communicated great throughout the process, and he put a lot of thought and care into his approach to producing quality. I highly recommend Johnny.

I had a song parody that I wanted a professional to record for me. I could not be happier to have chosen Johnny Walker. My song came out just how I imagined. He was very prompt with my song as well as contacting me and answering all my questions. I would highly recommend Johnny.

Interview with Johnny Walker

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: I have a small home studio in a treated room full of guitars to inspire me. Mics: Shure SM7B, MXL 990 condenser Interface: Apollo Twin DAW: Logic Pro X

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I am especially proud of my first completely solo written and recorded acoustic sync album. I've had some interest from some music libraries on picking it up and this really lit a fire under me! 10 songs, with 67 different tracks with the alternate versions!

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Finishing up a solo sync blues album at the moment, co-writing, working on some vocals for clients on another platform.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: I've learned a ton from Kris Bradley at Boomfox Productions. She's a killer singer, player, and producer and has a great course out there on Logic Pro!

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Don't get me wrong, I love analog, but for my recording I am digital. Sheer convenience. Also, most of what I work on for clients is for a demo or worktape of a song, not for a release.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I'll make it right. If you are paying me your hard earned money to work on your music, I will make sure I live up to my services.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Creating and bringing songs to life.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Can you sing in (insert genre here)? I'll give anything a shot, and send a quick iPhone recording to see if my voice is a fit or not for you before we go forward.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: Recording, especially if a simple guitar / vocal, doesn't have to be very expensive, or take a long time.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: When do you need this completed by? What artist would you like to tailor this to? Can you please send a complete lyric sheet, rough Worktape of the song?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Just be very clear in your expectations and what you are looking for in a track, or for your project.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My Taylor 315ce (wedding present from my wife!), my Gibson ES-335 Figured Turquoise, MacBook, interface, SM7B! That'd do it!

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I've been singing live for around 20 years now, long before I could legally get into bars. I've been writing heavily the last 4 years, and started recording my own work tapes and demos around the same time. I pride myself in moving forward with every song and opportunity!

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Acoustic groove with a swampy vocal.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Keith Urban. Incredible soul, talent, player, vocalist!

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid!

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: Typically focus on country, blues, and some rock.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: My strongest skill is following up on my word and being genuine. Recording-related, I would say breathing life into a song with a simple acoustic guitar and vocal track.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I believe I can bring forth emotion in both the vocal and guitar playing to give life to a song. Music is truly my passion and as a songwriter myself I know that a great recorded performance can mean the world for a great song!

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: Each job is different, but I feel if we are clear on requirements up front we'll work great together. Singing Requirements: Need complete lyric sheet Need worktape of song including chord changes, vocal melody, harmony Need reference artist to target vibe Need clear timeline requested for completion to prioritize work Guitar Requirements: Need worktape of song including chord changes (though I have done tracks for people when I was only given an iPhone vocal melody!) Need reference artist to target vibe Need clear timeline requested for completion to prioritize work

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Tom Petty, Hootie and the Blowfish, Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban, Led Zeppelin.... Anything that can stand on it's own as a vocal with an acoustic guitar is gold in my book!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most common work would include vocals and acoustic guitar work. I do a lot of clean 2-track work tapes for songwriters looking to get feedback on their songs that don't have the ability to play or lay a track down. Clean guitar/vocal demos are also a specialty (2-vocal, 2 acoustic). I've been inspired lately to create vibe tracks for TV/film. Let me know where I can help and we can figure something out!
