Interview with David Lopez Mixing

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: What are your goals? What is it that you look to accomplish with your music?

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: SSL 4000 Channel Strip, Laptop, Distressor, Audio Technica Headphones and most importantly my ears!

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I originally started off as a singer. Did some solo work and also was a singer in a band. I dabbed a bit into producing but have landed on Mixing and Mastering which I absolutely love! I have always loved and been intrigued by what happens behind the scenes. Like "how did they get that snare to sound so badass?"

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: The style of music I usually work on is rock, singer-songwriter and pop.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I would like to say I help bring a unique style to my mixes without ever going away from what the artist intends. My job is to serve the song and production and that's what I'm here to do. Give you the best mix and master possible.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: The way it typically goes is once my client has sent me the multitracks I'll import them into my ProTools session. I will then get my session organized, check any phases issues on things like drums bass with DI and amp etc. Once I've done all that I will create a quick rough balance of everything to get it ready for me to start mixing the next day.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: My mixing room is setup in my home studio where I use my Raven MTi2 as my center piece of my studio. I mix 100% in the box but love to use tape console emulations to help bring more character to my clients mixes. Can't forget about my Kali Audio LP-8s. These really help me hear the little things in the mix.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I provide both Mixing and Mastering services. Majority of my clients will request both Mixing and Mastering to be done.

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: Definitely a tough one because I love to work with analog. But at the same time I love to use my Slate Raven! Also, it's crazy how great these plugins sound!

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: I promise to always maintain clear communication and professionalism throughout our work together.

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: I love the creative aspect of what I do. I never know what'll be in each track.

  23. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  24. A: "What you do is easy."

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: I know budget is a big part in this but try and find someone who will be right for you and your music.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I have always aspired to work with Demi Lovato she is crazy talented and would love the opportunity to create music with her.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: You'll hear this from almost everyone but it's so true. Do what is best for the song and if it sounds good then it is good.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: I am heavily inspired by Chris Lord Age, Warren Huart and Bob Clearmountain.
