Interview with Topher Wright
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their respective places in the production process. One is not inherently better than the other, but they each have their pros and cons. It really all comes down to what you want. With that said, for most artists in 2025, digital is the way to go. It's cheaper, easier to make revisions, and if you want to have an analog sound, you can still get really close with digital tools because the emulations have improved so much.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to always keep your ideas top of mind. I want you to be so happy with my work, and I will work hard to make sure that happens every time.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love giving an artist a finished track (or watching them listen to it in my studio) and seeing their reaction as their vision has fully come to life. I know that I've helped an artist truly realize their vision through my technical abilities.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think that audio engineers are just the 'technical' people. But I think that a great engineer has to have a lot of artistic sensibility as well. We're not just pushing dials to follow a formula for a good mix. Engineering is fascinating to me because it is the intersection of technical ability and art. Each mix decision effects the outcome, and is the difference between a decent song and an amazing one. So each decision needs to be guided by art, but backed up with technical knowhow.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to have a chat with the artist (when possible) before diving into a mix or edit session. I want to know what inspired them about the track. I want them to tell me what they were loving about the demo mix. The more I can understand that, the better I can maintain that vibe while also improving the overall sound quality in the editing, mixing or mastering process.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My setup is all run by my Mac Pro, connected to a UAD twin interface. My room is treated, and my primary mixing speakers are the Yamaha HS8s - though I love to check my mixes on my Grado RS1e headphones and my Auratone 5Cs. I do all my mixing and mastering with Pro Tools Ultimate.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in vocals, and I can deliver anything from a raw country or singer/songwriter vocal sound to a glitchy and auto-tuned sounding trap vocal. I am told I have an ear for using Melodyne, and I can get outstanding results using it. I'm also an accomplished Mixing and Mastering Engineer. Send me your track and I will give it a professional finish!

- Starting out on SoundBetterNov 04, 2025
Despite being an audio engineer for over 10 years, I've never used SoundBetter. When it first came out there was a lot of buzz so I created a profile, but I never used it for work or updated my credits. I guess I had enough to keep me busy in Los Angeles. Now, it feels like the right time to return to SoundBetter, spruce up my profile, and start taking clients in from all around the world!
