Hey! My name is Brian White, I'm a Multi-Platinum recording / mix engineer, from Los Angeles, California with numerous Billboard Top 10 records to my credit. I've had records come out with G-Eazy ft. Yo Gotti, & YBN Nahmir "1942". YBN Nahmir - "Bounce Out With That" & Nelly ft. Jacquees - "Freaky With You" to name a few.
My passion is recording and mixing records. I've been playing and listening to music for as long as I can remember, but have been actively working in the music business (recording, mixing, producing, playing guitar on tour with MGK, etc) for the last 8-9 years. As an established recording engineer, my focus and #1 goal is to insure the Artist's track comes to life, no matter what the genre is!
A little history on myself? After writing for and playing in several local bands, I landed an internship at (Cleveland’s) Lava Room Recording Studios where I learned the basics of audio engineering. Within a year, I worked my way up from making coffee and going on food runs to engineering sessions for artists in multiple genres. I eventually built and owned Empire Recording Studio, which was born from Lava Room Recording Studios. As I built Empire, I collected an impressive client base which includes credits with Trey Songz, Keyshia Cole, Young Jeezy, Wiz Khalifa, MGK, Tech N9ne and Kendrick Lamar, among many others. Interview with Brian C. White
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: - I recorded Machine Gun Kelly's - Black Flag album. It was the first National record I recorded from start to finish. I co mixed the project with Ben Schigel, and co-produced a track on the album entitled "Mind of a Stoner" ft. Wiz Khalifa. - Most recently I've recorded YBN Nahmirs singles, that have been taking off on streaming platforms, accumulating over 50 millions streams. - Also recently recorded Nelly's new single "Freaky With You" featuring Jacquees
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: MAC Pro 8-Core, Avid HDX, Vintech x73i, all UAD Plugins, and Waves Suite.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop / R&B / Pop / Pop Rock
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Mixed by East
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I grew up working on digital consoles and using virtual plug-ins. Although I love analog gear, this day and age it seems almost everything is being emulated through plug-ins. I would prefer to use analog, but for convenience sometimes digital is the way to go.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to get the best sounding product to you for a reasonable rate and speedy turn around. I'm not happy until you're happy!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I absolutely love music. I love taking ideas and really bringing them to life. If it's tracking or mixing, I really like to work with the artists to try to get the best possible takes out of them, and making sure there mixes are exactly how they want to hear them.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook Pro, Avalon 737, Neaumann TLM103, AKG240 Headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been working in the music industry for roughly 6 years. I started as an intern in Cleveland OH's Lava Room Recording, and quickly worked up the ranks to become a lead engineer. After growing my client base I decided to open my own studio entitled "Empire Recordings", where I worked with countless national acts that came through the city, Machine Gun Kelly, Young Jeezy, and Kendrick Lamar to name a few.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: While recording, I'm fast and efficient. Flying hooks, and comping vocals are done with ease. Mixing I like to take a little different approach with, mixing the song as many times until my client is happy.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with James Fauntleroy, the way he approaches songs and his creative process to me is truly inspiring.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't "fix it in the mix". Get great takes while recording, and the mix will come together a lot cleaner.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocal Tracking, Mixing, Editing
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to organize sessions, and get the session as clean as possible. I then do vocal comping / edits, and proceed to move through the mix.
