Interview with Artem Kharchenko

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a track for a rising electronic music artist where I handled both mixing and mastering. The song became a hit on streaming platforms, praised for its dynamic depth and emotional clarity. Seeing the artist’s excitement and success made it an unforgettable experience.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently, I’m mixing and mastering an indie pop/rock album for an independent artist and fine-tuning a series of electronic tracks for streaming platforms like Spotify and TikTok. Each project challenges me to explore unique sonic textures and emotional depth.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I use a hybrid approach because both have their strengths. Analog provides warmth, depth, and character that’s hard to replicate, while digital offers precision and flexibility. Together, they create a balanced, polished sound that brings out the best in every track.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I promise to treat your music with the same care and dedication as if it were my own. My goal is to deliver a professional, polished product that exceeds your expectations while staying true to your artistic identity.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love collaborating with artists and bringing their vision to life. Every track is a new challenge, and there’s nothing more rewarding than hearing the excitement in a client’s voice when their music sounds exactly how they imagined—or even better.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: • Question: Can you make my track sound professional? Answer: Absolutely! I use a combination of high-end analog and digital tools to bring out the best in your music, ensuring it meets industry standards while staying true to your vision. • Question: How many revisions are included? Answer: I include two free revisions to ensure you’re fully satisfied with the final product.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Many people think mixing and mastering is just about making things louder. In reality, it’s about balancing and enhancing each element of a track to create a cohesive and emotionally impactful experience for the listener.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: • What is your vision for this track/project? • Do you have any reference tracks that inspire you? • What platform will this track be released on (e.g., Spotify, TikTok, YouTube)? • Are there specific elements in the mix you’d like emphasized?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Look for someone who listens carefully to your vision and communicates clearly. A great mixing/mastering engineer should not only have technical skills but also the ability to understand and enhance your unique sound.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: 1. Neve 8816 summing mixer for that analog warmth. 2. API 2500 bus compressor for dynamic control. 3. Genelec 8050a monitors for accurate sound. 4. Universal Audio UAD-2 Octo for versatile plugins. 5. A high-end laptop with DAW software to tie it all together.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I’ve been in the music industry for over 20 years, starting as an assistant in recording studios and learning from top engineers. Over time, I developed my own hybrid approach, combining the best of analog and digital techniques to deliver exceptional results.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is a blend of analog warmth and digital precision, with a focus on emotional depth and sonic clarity. I aim to create mixes that feel rich, dynamic, and immersive, while always staying true to the artist’s vision.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with James Blake. His ability to combine raw emotion with experimental sound design is inspiring, and collaborating with him would be an opportunity to explore creative boundaries and craft something truly unique.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Always leave space in your mix. Less is more — don’t overcrowd the frequencies. Give each element its own room to breathe, and use subtle automation to create movement and dynamics for a more engaging track.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I work across various genres, but I often mix and master electronic music, indie pop/rock, ambient tracks, and acoustic ballads. My versatility allows me to adapt to different styles and bring out the unique essence of each project.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is my ability to enhance a song’s emotional impact while maintaining its clarity and balance. I combine technical precision with creative intuition to craft mixes and masters that truly connect with listeners.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring a unique combination of technical expertise and creative intuition. My approach focuses on enhancing the emotional impact of a song while ensuring it meets industry standards. I treat every track as a collaboration, drawing from the artist’s vision to deliver a mix that connects with listeners.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I start by discussing the artist’s vision and understanding their goals. Next, I review the stems for quality and alignment. During mixing, I craft a balance between analog warmth and digital precision, sending previews for feedback. Once the mix is approved, I move on to mastering to optimize the track for its intended platform.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My studio features a hybrid analog-digital workflow with high-end gear like the Neve 8816 summing mixer, API 2500 bus compressor, SSL G-Bus, and Lavry Gold AD converter. Monitoring is handled with Avantgarde Acoustic Duo, Genelec 8050a, and Yamaha NS20 in a perfectly tuned room for precise sound evaluation.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I’m inspired by modern producers like Andrew Scheps for his bold mixing techniques, Noah “40” Shebib for his atmospheric and emotive sound design, and Disclosure for their innovative approach to electronic music. Their creativity and technical mastery fuel my passion for delivering exceptional mixes.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I specialize in mixing and mastering, bringing clarity, balance, and depth to tracks while preserving the artist’s original vision. Whether it’s electronic, indie pop/rock, or ambient music, my goal is to enhance each project so it sounds professional and engaging on any playback system.
