Interview with Ju Fresh
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The most fun I've had on a project was this artist/friend of mine named Malcolm Jabriel who goes by "Jabriel" now. His energy matches mine and we honestly can't miss when we work together. The whole process of recording his album "Manifest" was a masterpiece. I was like a 40 to him being drake.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Whatever you guys throw at me lol.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at the moment, but I would like to get to know other creatives as well!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! Analog gives you that warmth feel, but digital can help it be more creative.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to turn your visions into reality!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The whole creative process. From start to finish, I love when a project comes together from an idea you are thinking of.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Why is your name Ju Fresh? Are you a jew? No, I'm not a jew, but maybe I should run with being a black Jew lol. My name is Julius and back in school my friends would call me Ju or JuJu for short. Plus I make fresh beats.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People thinking mixing and mastering is the same thing.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How's your day? That's usually the question that leads to how the song or songs are going to come out.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just research everything before you hit them about services. Ask questions as well if you are concerned. No question is a dumb question at all. The first step in customer services is making sure the client is comfortable with working with you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook Pro, TLM 103 Mic, FL Studio, Protools, Adams t7v monitors and I'm set to go lol.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing music since I was 13, but around 17 is when I got serious with it. 12 year music producer. 6 year audio engineer. I've been writing songs all my life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm all about the bounce!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kendrick Lamar. He's what hip hop is supposed to be in today's music. Working with him would be an honor!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Just be you. We learn the "rules" of music production just to "break" them.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop, Trap, and RNB
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Music Production
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Bounce and Energy!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Wherever my emotions take me when creating.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm simple. All I have in my home studio is a ST55 mic with a kaotica eyeball. Apollo Twin MKII. FL Studio and Protools (with a lot of plugins.) You don't need a bunch of gear to make music sound great in my opinion. Plus, I think creating with less makes you more creative.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The producers that inspired me are Just Blaze, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Timbaland, The Neptunes, S1, and Three6Mafia The Engineers that inspired me are Leslie Brathwaite, 40, Young Guru, and Jaycen Joshua
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I'm a music producer, recording/mixing engineer, and songwriter for my clients.
