Interview with Tiz McNamara
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My Sophomore EP 'Miami Night Sky' is my finest work to date. I am extremely proud of the writing, performing, producing and engineering of this piece and it has gained airplay in more than 5 countries and received great support on official Spotify playlists
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Working on my own debut album as well as 2 EP's and 1 album for Toronto artists
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Kevin Herron, Wavefield Studios/Brian Casey,
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, ease of of workflow and transportability. Analog is great but crazy expensive and not overly practical.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to give them something that they will be excited to share with the world
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love collaborating with other creatives and making something greater than the sum of the parts
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Is it ok to record vocals at home. Yes it is but I give tips on how to treat the room with soft furnishing such as pillows, blankets, singing in a closet full of hanging clothes to reduce reflections.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think producers and writers just sit at home having fun instead of the reality of spending years honing your craft.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask for goals with the release, is it for radio, playlists, commercial release etc. Any reference tracks and vibe they are going for.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as clear as possible about what you are looking for and you are more likely to get it
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Interface, Guitar,Midi Piano, Mic, Laprop
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I played drums since 3 years old thenI studied a music degree in LIPA, Liverpool owned by Sir. Paul McCartney. Since 2013 I've been writing, producing and creating music. Highlights include performing on a UK No.1 single with Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams and Shane McGowan. Since then my own music has reached over 14 Million Streams on Spotify
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My Style is Singer songwriter but with more pop hooks
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Damien Rice, for me he is one of the greatest lyricists of all time. Or John Mayer as he writes incredible tunes
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Use the blind test for each addition. add new feature(Compression etc) close your eyes and turn the plug in on and off and only if you can tell the difference should the addition be kept. Too many people add things they don't need that make tracks louder but not better
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually folk/singer songwriter with some electronic elemements
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Authentic lyrics are my strongest skill
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring years of experience as a writer. My forte is lyrics but I also write very catchy melodies.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on the job I generally write out a goal/list of references for what the client wants and then break the job down into hr by hr until I'm 100% happy. I try and get each job done as fast as possible for the client but without ever sacrificing quality.
