Interview with Dominic Francis

Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A piano, a sound system, a powerful desktop and screen, an audient ASP 8024-24 HE DLC mixing desk and a solar-powered power supply for electricity.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I starter writing music and messing around with DAWs when I was about 10 years old. I continued to pursue music as just a hobby of mine until I was 18 years old, when I started to focus on music more. I then went to university at the age of 20 years old to do a degree in Creative Music Production and now I work with several artists and musicians within the industry and I have turned it into my full time job.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as having heavy urban influences with a sprinkle of commercial input.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Eminem as I have been listening to him for my whole life and he, in my opinion, is one of the greatest Hip-Hop artists of all time.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on finding the right sounds (either from a preset, using sound design or using loops) before you move onto plug ins, as opposed to trying to make something sound good that doesn't in the first place.

A: Music Production
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: - Production knowledge in regards to plug-ins, mixing techniques, arrangement ideas, sound choice and speed. - Song Writing knowledge in regards to rhyme schemes, word play, song structure, song concepts, story telling and lyric ideas.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on the type of work that I am doing but it will typically be.. - Communicate with the client to find out what their direction/vision is and what they need - Get to work straight away and try to capture what the client is looking for - Send the work over to the client for feedback - Make any amendments to the project to finalise everything
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home studio set up consisting of 2x Yamaha HS5's, Audio-Technica AT2035, a widescreen HD monitor for improved workflow, a MacBook Pro and desktop PC and some ambient lighting for some extra inspiration!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I look up to several music producers within the industry but some of my favourites are Dave Pensado, Dr.Dre, Oak Felder, Timbaland and Kanye West.
