Interview with Morgan Vesper
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I have a few original songs I'm in the final stages of mixing and mastering for my own artist release.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Boom Fox Productions! I've learned so much from her. She really knows her stuff!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. There are so many amazing digital products utilizing analog sounds these days. There's just so much you can do with digital without having to own a ton of bulky and expensive gear.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that I get to do what I love! I love every aspect of creating music! And I love working with other creative people, making their day, and working at home is another plus.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I think a lot of people don't realize all the technical skills and hard work that goes into singing, toplining, and vocal production. The voice is just like any instrument; it takes technique and practice to master. Then there's a whole process to writing lyrics and melodies to tell a story while complimenting the track, as well as recording harmonies, stacks, ad libs, and editing vocals- tuning, EQs, reverbs, delays, compression, effects, etc.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Where do you plan to use this song? What is the use/purpose?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as detailed as possible! Voice memos, lyric ideas, melody ideas, mood boards, reference tracks, themes, moods, vibes, etc. The more communication, the better we can bring your idea to life and make you absolutely in love with the final result!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Easy! Laptop, mic, midi keyboard, speakers, and ME (my voice is an instrument *hair flip*)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been singing my entire life- in talent shows, in musicals, creating demos for TV networks, etc. I mostly focused on acting for a long time, while making music on the side. I would create loops on my Boss RC 202 and build songs that I didn't know what to do with. When covid hit, I couldn't act on stage anymore, so I used the time off to invest in a home studio and finally learn Ableton so I could fully flesh out and produce all the songs in my voice memos! Within four years, I've produced and recorded 8 original songs, released them to streaming platforms, partnered with a Sync Music Library, and performed vocals on collaboration projects and produced for musicians in my community!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is soulful, ethereal, electro pop. I bring in influences from a few different genres, with dreamy, soulful pop vocals over melodic dance beats.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to do vocals for KSHMR, Disclosure or Flume! They are absolute masters of their craft, with catchy hooks and ear candy that you can't get out of your head! All of the their female vocalists are absolutely amazing and I would love to create a track as memorable and impactful as some of theirs!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always stay organized as you go. Color code everything, label your tracks, tune as you go, delete clicks and dead space, etc. Every little organizational move will save you so much headache down the line in any stage of producing, recording, or sending files.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work mostly on electronic music, while incorporating influences from R&B, Pop, and House music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think singing is my strongest skill. Singing is my original love, and I have worked hard my entire life to master and hone my craft. I would say that I am also very strong at producing and idea generation. But singing will always have my heart.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have a background in musical theatre and acting, with opera and musical theatre vocal training, as well as the ability to produce. I bring a unique blend of writing, collaboration, musicality, and storytelling to bring ideas and emotions to life. I call to the muses for inspiration, call to the heart for emotional expression, call on my experience for skill and accuracy, and get technical to make tweaks and adjustments with professional level precision and quality.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on what I'm working on. First I will communicate with my client to hear their melodies, song ideas, story ideas, theme, mood, inspiration, purpose, etc. to get a clear idea of the project and what they have in mind. Then, if I'm top lining, I will drag in the track and freestyle over it to allow any words or melodies to come forth. Then I'll start writing out lyrics based on what came out. Once I have one part written enough to track, I'll lay down vocals. I'll use Melodyne to tune as I go. Then I'll lay down harmonies, stacks, and ad libs. Once everything is tuned, I'll add a CLA Vocals for some simple reverb, delay, and compression, to give the producer an idea of how the vocals will sound in a mix. I'll also send over the dry stems so they can mix it how they please. If I'm producing, I'll use the vocals, melodies, or reference track as a starting point and add the appropriate drums, synths, bass, and other instruments and ear candy based on the themes, vibes, tone as discussed. I'll add EQ, compression, sidechains, etc. as necessary for a good mix to send over to the artist/client and tweak anything they may request.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In my studio I use a Macbook Pro, Ableton Live 11 Suite, Neumann TLM 103 Microphone, Scarlet 4i4 interface, Either the Arturia Minilab or Williams 111 keyboard for midi instruments.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Karra and Reid Stefan, Chris Bradley with Produce Like a Boss, Biianco, Disclosure, Empress Of, etc.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I either record, tune, and lightly edit vocals for producers/DJs with prepared tracks, or I produce beats for music artists to sing or rap over. I am always down to collaborate or adjust to bring the vision to life.
