Interview with Amy Hannam

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was the lead vocalist on the closing track for the Sonic Forces Soundtrack. It's called 'Light Of Hope' and I loved working on it!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on a second album with a client. He has released the first album we did and now I'm playing a more creative role in it and I'm excited!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm new to this platform so I will update this as I go!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I've recorded with both and both have their positives!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To deliver a high quality product. If a client wants changes I will always do my best to ensure they are happy with the final product.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Creativity, and working with like minded people, and then hearing the final product

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Usually the price I charge and if I can create backing vocal harmonies, which I can!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That recording is a really quick process. I am a perfectionist and I won't send final vocals to a client unless they sound great. No matter the price. It reflects badly on myself and the final product.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is the style of the track? What they require (lead vocals? harmonies? etc)? What is the timeframe?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Send me a message! Haha! I'm always open to chat through ideas!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, headphones, mic, interface, pop shield.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I studied at music school and have been in the industry around 10 years, recording, writing and gigging live (because you cant beat live music).

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: pop/soul with a jazzy edge.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: There are so many! Maybe James Blake as I love his style, and any of the old jazz icons.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: After a few hours on a project, take a break and go back and listen again with fresh ears!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Usually soul, RnB or pop. I often write hooks for house or EDM tracks.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Versatility. I have a strong stylistic sense for different genres, and I can replicate a style well. I trained in Jazz, contemporary music and even Musical theatre, my voice is versatile.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Client satisfaction! Some clients want creativity and others have their own solid idea of how a track should sound, so I work with that to create a brilliant finished product!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Depending on the brief, I start by getting a feel for the track, and communicating with the client to ensure were on the same page creatively. For tracks that are already prewritten I record the vocals and send a demo to the client to ensure they are happy and then I edit them before send the final vocals over. For lyrics or melody writing, I will get a variety of ideas sent to the client and work closely with them to get the track sounding great, before recording final vocals.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Rode NT1A Logic Pro X

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Amy Winehouse - her jazz vocals and lyrics are amazing. Ella Fitzgerald - her improv skills are unbeaten For style I like BANKS and Solange,

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly record lead vocals and harmonies on prewritten tracks for independent artists, but I also write lyrics and melodies for hooks and whole tracks.
