Munn on SoundBetter

Rescue your vocal mix with my unique vocal engineering. I specialize in creating the right sound for anyone's vocal and cleaning up the issues that come with recording vocals at home or even professional studios. It's not easy to get perfect takes so that's where I jump in to help get your project over the finish line and have you sounding better.

I'm Munn, an independent music artist and vocal engineer currently based in LA. I've engineered my own vocal and mixed all my music since day one. This taught me invaluable lessons as I pieced together methods to get professional sounding vocals from some very unprofessional takes. It's not easy to get perfect vocal takes - it's expensive to record on hardware compressors and pre amps at studios - and that often leaves music artists with less than desirable vocal mixes. This is where I can step in to help your project. I can take less than perfect vocal recordings and make them shine how you'd hope. I also understand how frustrating it can be to love the demo vocals for a song because it captured a certain emotion you are struggling to recreate.. this is also where my services could help you. Many times I've run into this as an artist and decided to put in the extra work to improve the demo mix in order to keep the sound I had originally captured in those takes. Vocal tuning/comping through a series of tuning plugins is also something I specialize in and have been hired to do so for projects. My comps and tuning have gone head to head with some of the biggest engineers and been selected. Why? Because i put in the time and have attention to detail for every word you sing. I feel the emotion in the takes and can put together the best top line possible that still feels natural.

Interview with Munn

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both. Analog sound is unparalleled to a trained ear, but digital gives flexibility and can perform functions that analog never could. In rescuing a rough vocal, it will almost always take digital plugins.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: You're gonna sound heaps better than before.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Freedom to be creative every day.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That vocal tuning is as quick as dragging the notes to the right spot, but it's actually a slow and meticulous process depending on the sound you desire.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Know that at the end of the day, a vocal mix is always limited based on the quality of the original recordings. That being said, with patience and attention to detail, there is so much more to work with in a few average takes than most engineers think. I find the gold in those takes.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: My bible, my laptop, my apollo, headphones, and a mic.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I quit college and jumped straight in. I've been doing it for 6 years now full time.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Surgical to preserve a natural vocal sound.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Jon Bellion because he is Jon Bellion.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Less is more if you want a natural sound but at the end of the day there are no rules; so if you like the sound, then that is always enough.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Soft pop, pop, and rap vocals

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Taking a vocal from zero to hero

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: A quality vocal mix that is leaps above what it started as.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Vocal Rescue. If the vocal takes aren't quite what they need to be, I get it there.
