Marlo Scott on SoundBetter

Billboard-Charting Producer | Songwriter | Programmer | Musician | Major credits under Sony Music/RCA. Produced on multiple projects with millions of plays generated. I create a custom sound for passionate and independent artists looking for high-quality and radio-ready music that captures their unique vision.

Hello everyone, I am Marlo Scott. I'm an accomplished Producer, Songwriter, Programmer, Bassist and Musical Director. I've been working professionally in the music industry for over 15 years. And I've had the opportunity to work alongside some of the industries most talented artists, songwriters and producers.

Best known for my production work with Hip Hop/R&B Artist Christon Gray from 2011-2018. Notably, I wrote and produced on Gray's "The Glory Album" in 2016. The album went on to peak at #5 on the Billboard R&B album chart, while also hitting #6 on the Christian album chart. Currently, the album has over 17,400,000 plays on Spotify.

One thing I do best, produce music for artists looking for a modern sound with an old-school feel. But most importantly, I believe that the artist comes first and their vision executed. Ultimately, the goal is to utilize your raw talent or song idea, and transform it into a musical masterpiece that you are proud of. By working with me, you will leave inspired and hopefully have something new, fresh, and musically different.

I specialize in: Production, Arranging, Composing, Beat Making, Programming, Bass Guitar, Synths/Keys

Interview with Marlo Scott

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: In 2010 I started working with an Independent Artist on their debut album. The Artist and I co-wrote and produced the entire album together and the album took about a year to complete. When the album was released it became an independent success and a couple of songs on the album went viral on YouTube. And from the success of that album the Artist was able to sign his first record deal. That was a very proud moment for me.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: My friend Blaze Johnson Jr., also known on SoundBetter under the name Blaze Johnson Music. He is a very talented artist, songwriter and producer. He's also one of the best vocalist I know.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I'm currently working with a few different artists. I also have some collaborations and other placements in the works as well.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: For me, both. We live in a wonderful digital world now, all of the convenience is great. And analog creates a feeling and an experience that I believe still hasn't been duplicated yet.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to help create an elite body of work that will exceed their expectation. Satisfaction is always my goal.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The creative part of the process. I love doing things like going through my files, trying to pick the right drums or even finding the best pad that may match the vision a client may have for a song.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: My laptop (w/endless power supply), headphones, interface, midi controller and one of my bass guitars.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I am very versatile. But through my versatility you will tend to hear a little foundation of soul. Whether it's through the drums, a chord progression or even a guitar riff, the influence shows up every time.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I would love to work with Bruno Mars. His creativity is next level and his ability to fuse multiple genres within popular music today is unmatched. You can tell he is very passionate about what he does, as am I. Truly, we would be a match made in heaven.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Lyrics, vocals and melodies are what most fans pay attention to when listening to a song, then maybe everything else. So as a producer, I make sure to do everything possible to always complement those specific elements that the average listener will mainly notice.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Pop, R&B-Soul, Hip hop and Gospel.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Communication. Having the best communication allows me to help execute a vision or idea the client may have.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: Creativity, experience, energy and overall, high quality professional production.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Quincy Jones, David Foster, Chick Corea, The Neptunes, Stevie Wonder, Teddy Riley, Dallas Austin, Rodney Jerkins, Michael Jackson, Prince, Timbaland, LA & Babyface, Rick Rubin, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, Phil Collins, Scott Storch, Ryan Leslie, Kanye West, D'Mile, Max Martin, 40, Harmony Samuels, Devin Morrison, just to name a few.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: I start by having a conversation with the client. I first like to get their vision for the project and also what inspires them. Then I'll take any demo files, studio recorded or even a phone voice note, along with additional specifications and references, then I start building the music from there. I really enjoy the process.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: I mainly work out of my home studio with all of the standard recording equipment. I also have every type of plug-in or sound needed to produce any type of record. But if I'm running a big session, there are 3 major recording studios in my city that I choose from to work out of.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Turn a basic concept or idea into a professional musical composition.
