Interview with Guy James
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My EP "Amplified". I wrote all the music and produced the tracks from the other musicians.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: New music of course! Also a masters degree in Songwriting through Berklee college of music online.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: n/a
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I use digital more though because that is the industry now and analog is typically more complicated and slower to work with.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will give you my best always.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Touring the world playing music for foreign audiences.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "can you make it sound like "fill in the blank". To which I will say yes, and proceed to listen, learn and imitate".
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: "He's a "type" of musician". I have potential to learn and grow in any direction.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Is there a chart or reference recording you can share? What are some artists you want this to sound like? What will this recording be used for?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The better you can communicate what you want the better and quicker I can get it to you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Ha! without power I guess it would have to a couple acoustic instruments, hammock, surfboard and machete.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a touring Active Air Force Band Guitarist since 2015.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: "Driven". For me an electric guitar comes to life with overdrive. Acoustically I like to have a driving approach to strumming and picking.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Tedeschi Trucks band is a family band and hold a special place in my heart.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Know your instrument. Using automated plug-in loops to play the music is just a B.S approach.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Pop, Country.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Improvisation is skillset I feel confident in as well as my ability to take simple folk song ideas and build a stronger song form.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: To the best of my ability I try to reach the clients vision. This can mean a variety of things but the final product will be a perfectly balanced track(s) ready for mixing.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I prefer to have as much info and examples of what a client wants, that helps me produce the best parts.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record all electric guitars through my Fractal FM9 direct stereo. If I record Acoustic I will set up a mic and record that way.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mark Ronson is a brilliant producer. Band leaders like Michael League are role models for me as leaders.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Home studio recording for Electric and Acoustic guitar is my most common request. I have also been asked to demo music products for companies.
