Interview with Miguel Lara Jr.

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was the recording engineer for my first album XVI Bars: The Rebirth. This project was extremely personal for me due to it being the first body I’ve released since joining the Navy in 2015.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A few side projects of my own. I’m looking to show the world who I am as an artist.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, I highly recommend my boy Dacota G! That man makes magic happen and is the epitome of a true professional.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both, I definitely favor analog due to its overall quality and sheer presence compared to a project that’s all digital. But nowadays, these plugins are getting to the point where the lines are starting to get blurred between the two realms.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will always put my all into your project.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Discovering new music and untapped potential.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you make me sound like (insert name)? I can get you as close to it as possible but everyone’s voice is unique. Let’s focus on making you sound the best that we can.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People think that we can fix everything in the mix. The better your recording is, going into the mix, the better the end product will be.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your vision? Are there any deadlines you need to meet? Do you have track outs (stems) for your song? What DAW are you using to record in? What platform are you releasing on?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I’m in the military so my schedule is somewhat unpredictable. Which is why communication throughout this process is critical.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Baby Bottle SL, UAD Apollo quad, MacBook Pro, KrK speakers, and a pair of sunglasses 😎

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career has been very unorthodox. I started making music at the age of 15 then eventually went to study audio pronunciation in Nashville after high school. After graduating with my bachelor’s in 2012, I enlisted in the Navy in 2014. I’ve recently just got back into the music scene in July of 2019. I’m currently still serving and I make music when I’m not at work.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I’d describe it as the ambition of an independent artist with the skill set of a professional.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Drake. His style is extremely versatile and his production value is always top notch.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don’t be afraid to take your time. Quality ALWAYS beat quantity. Focus on making each song your best song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: It honestly depends on the project. I believe communication throughout the entire process is key. Once contact is initiated, I like to discuss the artist’s vision for the project, get the stems, and start the project. I send out progress mixes to ensure the artist is happy with the direction of the song as well as identifying any elements we might might want to add.
