There are good bass players in the world. And then there are jaw-droppingly awesome bass players that totally transform a song. Jamaal is that second kind of player. Incredible! You *definitely* want Jamaal to play on your track.

Interview with Jamaal Andrews

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I like both. Analog is warm and present and it usually requires some real effort. Digital is versatile, and often times helps speed up the process of recording or dialing in sounds.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: The most common question is always "Do I like the song?" In the most truthful and respectful way, I give my answer. I also add that my opinion of the song in no way hinders my performance. I give 1000% no matter what.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Do you have an idea or any examples of what you want the bass to sound like?

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Pop, and Hip Hop are my normal genres.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Attention detail. I pride myself in making sure I notice every nuance like a passing note or a slight shift in a rhythm.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: My process starts with me listening to the song 1 or 2 times. While listening I'll review any song notes that are given. This allows me immerse myself in the sound and feel of the song. Then if necessary, I'll listen once more so I can chart out the song. Next I hit the record button and go for it. Unless otherwise discussed, I always do a straight forward take and then a take where I move around a bit more. I always want to give the client options.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: Basses: Fender Jazz Bass 4 and 5 Strings; F Bass BN5 5 String, Sire M7 6 String Computer: 2 Apple Macbook Pro 15in(2015 and 2018 models) Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, Neve RNDI, Avalon U5 Software: Pro Tools, Logic, Reason

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: For bass guitar some my biggest influences are Marcus Miller, Anthony Jackson, Sharay Reed, and Reggie Young. Production wise Rodney Jerkins, Tony Hemmings, Aaron Lindsey, and Quincy Jones.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
