I have thoroughly enjoyed my recording process with Fraser. Throughout the process, he proved himself to be a consummate professional and exhibited an abundance of patience while I learned to record from my bedroom in the states. He was very present throughout the entire recording process, offering guidance on how to set up my recording space and suggesting original ideas on how to achieve my desired sound aesthetic. His knowledge of recording techniques and software programs is extensive. I would highly recommend working for hi on your next program, I certainly will.

Interview with Fraser McKnight
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Marisa ML - Session Pianist and Arranger
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both are great for different reasons - I think the difference is more in the way we use the technology than the sound it provides at this point as both of them are so advanced. I use a mostly digital setup as it's more compact and much more powerful.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Client satisfaction.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's the duration of each song and how many tracks or stems are there? Does your project have a deadline that you need to meet? What media channels and formats will you be using to release?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Find a good reference track - a commercial release which you think has a great sound and matches your vision sonically. This gives me a concrete example which helps me to understand and meet your vision.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My goal is to bring the best out of you - the artist. Everything that I do is geared towards that. Your song should have a great sound quality so it doesn't stick out in a playlist with other similar songs, but also have some elements that stand out enough to grab someone's attention and win them over.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1 - Remove and minimise any issues that I can hear. 2 - Strengthen what's focal to the song. 3 - Check any references I have to bring it in line with your vision. 4 - Balance and pan elements, including transient shaping. 5 - Decide on the spacial dimensions such as reverb/delay and stereo width. 6 - Get the mix to translate well on different playback systems.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: There are far too many to name here but in terms of workflow I would say the Beatles. The Beatles' early production had to be very decisive due to the limitations of the technology they were using, the production is also very creative and has a performative element to it.
