Shaun O'Brien Audio on SoundBetter

I'm an Australian producer with an ear for modern sound. I specialise in mixing and production - specifically making good songs sound great. I have worked with a multitude of artists from all backgrounds: pop, rock, R&B and even folk music. The common thread between all my projects is that I am dedicated to see YOUR vision of the song come to life.

Hi! I offer three distinct services: audio mixing, audio mastering and audio production. Simply put, I am here to bring your musical vision to life and to have you LOVE the end product. If I haven't done that, I haven't done my job. Click on Contact and we can start working together!

My services:
- Mixing: I will mix together your song from audio files that you provide. General references and input from you for vibe/style are welcome so I can bring your track to life.
- Mastering: I will master your mixed track (or mixed stems) and bring it to a competitive loudness level whilst checking for compatibility across sound systems.
- Production: I will add production elements to your pre-exisiting compositions, whether it be adding instrumentation, SFX or any combination of either to help your song reach it's potential.

I've worked with Shaun for a few years now and it's been such a pleasure watching his ability to craft cohesive mixes grow. Shaun's understanding of space has been pivotal to so many of my own tracks and I look forward to working with him further!

Interview with Shaun O'Brien Audio

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: My friend Zachary Staines. He writes amazing top lines for songs and has an incredible ear for modern music production.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I believe both have their place, however there is nothing stopping a production from becoming the best it could be with or without one or the other. The difference lies in how you use them.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I want them to fall in love with their song like it's their first time hearing it.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: The creativity, and watching artist's projects grow from an idea into a fully realised production.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What artists inspire them? What influence did they have when writing/recording the song?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: You can have all the gear in the world to make a professional record, but it will always fail if you don't have the ear for it.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I have played music and guitar ever since I was a child, however I discovered a passion for music production in my late teens. I eventually went to the Conservatorium of Music Queensland and finished my bachelor of Music Technology there. Whilst studying I have been slowly working my way up over the past 5-6 years until now, where I am confidently engaging artists for me to work with them.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Vibrant.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Don't get too fussed about hard and fast rules. When you bend and break them, that's when you truly innovate.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Pop, folk, R&B. I actually started mixing and producing with metal music however.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Mixing is my strongest skill.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I aim bring the song to life. I have worked with some incredibly talented artists who have given me beautiful productions to work with, the only job left is to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together and give the song it's sound.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Firstly, I will listen to an artist about their vision of the song and about what sound they want to achieve. This is of the utmost importance, as I only work toward their goal and am only here to facilitate their vision. From there I begin the job, which I aim to complete as efficiently as possible. I aim to send the most complete version of the work to the artist so they can have every possible opportunity to critique it and help mold it with the revisions.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: Dedicated home studio with professional gear. I use Adam A7X monitors combined with the Sonarworks Reference 4 application to achieve a more accurate mixing/mastering process. For production I use my Komplete Kontrol S61 keyboard for jamming out ideas and my AKG C414 microphone for recording the artists I work with. Overall it is a minimal set up. I have specifically chosen all my gear and plug ins to be versatile and effective enough to meet all my needs to the highest standard.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: A combination of production and mixing is the most common type of work I do. I usually master my own work but occasionally work on tracks that were not mixed by myself.
