Interview with Jabbo Heyne

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Music is something you to forever. You can always remember and have access when you want it. That I like the most is you can share emotions with the audience. Music connects people... and I love supporting newcomers and seeing the progress they make!

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: Engineering is really hard, important stuff. Its like the other steps in the industry: producing and rapping or singing - you can't get without. As an engineer you have to speak with everyone: the lable, the artist, the producer, sometimes the recording engineer and so on. So the communication is really the key for me.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Listen to your gut feeling. Also give people a chance who have only a few reviews. They often have faster delivery, cheaper prices and also very good quality.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: Uh, thats hard. Definitely my U87 and Apollo X6. I would also take my old favorite headphones (they are 12 years old and I know them by rote). Then I would take a 1176 and of course: the Good Particle!

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I've already mixed and mastered in the age of 15 years. By offering online services, I got to know in the german rap scene more and experienced a lot. After visiting an audio school in Hamburg, I worked for a well-known producer in Vienna. Also, I got to know a top ten rapper who is a fabulous songwriter today. In our common sessions I recorded and mixed him and learned a lot. Now, I have my own recording studio in lower saxony and work as a full-time engineer. I daily record, mix and master songs and give also workshops.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Harmonic, detailed and musical mixes. Detailed, punchy masters.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: There are so much artists that I love for their music. Really, I could already mention all of them

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Practice is the everything. Of course, knowledge is key. But without practicing you get nothing. It doesn't matter if you are an artist, producer or engineer, get the work done.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Hip Hop, Pop & RnB

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My strongest skill is efficient work

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I spend much time to understand the artists and the song to really know where I want it to be. I always checking the demo in the mixing and mastering process. Furthermore, I give the artists the time that he needed to feel his final song on his own familiar surroundings. Typically, it takes one or two days and that's totally fine - then we go back and make a few small changes or the artist is already happy ;)

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: My studio setup is simple: good speaker, great converter in a well treated room. It gives me a fast workflow that allows me to mix and master like I always wanted to do

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Jaycen Joshua, Lex Barkey, Bainz

  27. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  28. A: Oh, that was a song production of some of the best rappers in my hometown. When I sent him my mix he said it was the worst thing he had ever heard. He no longer wanted the beat from the internet and had one made for him. when i got it i completely remixed the song and he said it was the best thing anyone has ever done for him. I recorded and mixed the song by the way.

  29. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  30. A: Digital, because of the workflow. Plugins give me the opportunity to quickly exchange processors that is a major advantage. I want to can always use different tools for every song.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Balance, control and movement

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Mixing and mastering of Rap, Pop & RnB type music
