Fogel Sound Studios is a 200 square foot micro-studio in the heart of San Francisco. Recently renovated by Fogel himself, the space is a cozy spot for individual artists and small groups to have fun recording and getting quality mixes for a fair price. Growing up within the vibrant and diverse San Francisco music scene, Fogel quickly found out his passion for music was nothing to glaze over. He found himself wanting to understand the science behind the signal flow, while learning how to uplift other talented voices in the music scene. In addition, Fogel's long career in live sound and audio installation, makes him a well-rounded engineer with a deep understanding for audio, signal flow, and client relations. The in-house engineer, Adam Fogel, has been producing music, podcasts, and voiceovers for over five years. For almost a decade, Fogel has been in studying all sides of audio, from the microphone to the console, from setting up meetings to erecting large scale PA systems. From DAWs to DSPs. Fogel's wide array of knowledge comes from both book smarts and streets smarts. Fogel is a passionate and committed audio engineer with the talent and drive to turn your idea into a finished project.

Interview with Fogel Sound Studios

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Although I can add to a tracks composition, I do not "make beats."

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I tend to ask about the project as a whole; what inspired the sound, the writing, the vision etc. I like to ask for similar artists or songs that inspire the same sonic qualities.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: The clearer the initial vision you have for your project, the more smooth the process.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Never underestimate the power of reference listening.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: When I meet a client for the first time, I like to listen to the demos and songs all the way through while taking notes. I also ask my clients to share a couple of artists that may invoke aesthetics for the target mix. Once all the goals are discussed and agreed upon, I get into the editing and mixing. When editing, I'll focus on compiling takes, tuning tracks and quantizing. Then I can get into the EQ, compression and FX processing of each track when necessary. As I go along, I rename and group tracks and takes accordingly, keeping the file management up to date. Lastly, I'll mix the stems, reference mix, take listening breaks and finalize the bounces for mastering. When satisfied, I check in with the client to ensure satisfaction. Thats when the deliverables get bounced and the whole project gets packaged.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I mix on two sets of monitors: Genelec 8010a with a paired 6" sub along with a classic pair of Mackie HR824. I work with Logic Pro on the Nucleus 2 with Dante enabled. My amp rack is hosting the Compellor 300 and the Aural Exciter with Big Bottom by Aphex. I also have a Tascam TA-1VP with Antares for those looking for an auto tuned vocal.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Some Producers that inspire me are Dave Pensado, Chris Lord-Alge, Dr Dre and my mentors, Gary Hobish, Robert Preston and Dana Jae.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Recording, editing, mixing and analog mastering. I specifically work with individual singers and rappers on their vocal development, stacking and arrangement. I also can help arrange and embellish compositions brought to my care.

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: For preamps, amps and compressors: Analogue all the way. Nothing so far has been able to completely duplicate the warmth of distortion that analogue compressors, amps and preamps can deliver. As far as almost anything else though, I'd go digital. Technology has come so far in duplicating analogue processors, and even creating better ones (like convolution reverbs)

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: I will help you develop, record and release your musical vision to the highest possible quality standard.

  21. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  22. A: Are you a producer?- Yes, I am, though I don't make hip hop beats primarily. I would rather record and produce what you have created and help your song develop further.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: More new age and modern with a nostalgic essence.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Any artist that is willing to work with me as I will them.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Typically its Trap, Rnb, and Hip Hop. Im an open book, working on any genre I can vibe with! I've worked on Pop, Gospel and more acoustical genres.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I pride myself in being fully enveloped in the artist's vision and do everything I can to dig out the hidden gems of an artist's talent and flair.
