Interview with Ben Bultrini

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Analog gear on the way into a digital recording device, digital for mixing, analog to master because nothing beats great analog sound of microphones and outboard gear, the ease and clarity of digital recording and mixing and the final touch of good analog mastering gear.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Laptop, Manley Reference Mic, Neve 1073 DPX Pre, Moog One, Genelec 8361A

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I've been at it professionally for 5 years but I've been producing as a hobby since 2014 and playing music since I was 5 years old.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Puma Blue because he's a great producer, singer and experiments with his own unique and dark vibe that I love.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: 1. Call to chat about expectations and needs 2. Make a rough first demo or mix 3. Get great musicians to play parts if needed 4. Continue til it is where it has to be 5. Mix and master

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Sometimes (even often) try something unorthodox and know your tools!

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I like bringing impact, dynamics and intrigue in my productions and mixes. Standing out is important and I like using weird sounds and techniques to push a song to another sonic and emotional level. I bring knowledge and experience on all aspects from the writing, production, recording, mixing and mastering.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I believe simplicity is key to a modern creative workflow. Thus, my home studio is quite basic with Adam Audio T5V monitors, Motu M2 Interface, Audio Tecnica m50x (I've had them for a decade!). I have one powerhouse synth, the Virus TI for production. For the rest I have a few acoustic guitars, an electric guitar and an electric bass - as well as various percussions, bells and whistles. However, I have access to state of the art equipment at Sonic City Studios Amsterdam which apart from the huge variety of equipment hosts an SSL 8000 G+/B and a Neve VR console with a 100m2 live room and all the mics and outboard gear you need.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I am inspired by the likes of Gil Scott Heron, Stevie Wonder, and Jimmy Page. In more modern sounds I aspire to the sound of Flying Lotus, Tame Impala and Kanye West, amongst others. The work of George Martin on The Beatles, as well as Paul McCartney's production work also inspire me.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Typically I work with artists and bands to either record, produce and/or mix music for them. I also compose music for film and audio visual media.
