Interview with Gerson Rafael
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Tell me exactly what you want, no matter how weird it sounds. Music is art and I'm your translator to the audience.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Shure Sm-7B, my laptop, Scarlett interface, mic stand and my phone.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started singing in church, after that I discovered I could use my bedroom as a studio. Began studying my favorite artists and how they made the songs. Had vocal lessons for 8 years, before I really decided I wanted to give my full 100%. Fast forward to 2020 and the pandemic hits. For me the perfect opportunity to lock myself up in my studio and making a lot of music. Ended up working with amazing DJ's like MOTi, Lucas & Steve, Burak Yeter, but also writing for Asia. Landed a number 1 hit with ABC-Z and have been working closely with great masterminds in the kpop scene. Next to that I'm also releasing my own songs as an artist, currently with more than 4 million streams on Spotify.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Recognisable, but at the same time something refreshing. My lyrics can be poetic, but also explicit. If you give me a few reference songs, I'll make sure it gets the same feeling, but still something new.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kpop band NCT (all of them: NCT127, WAYV, NCT Dream). The way their productions are set up and how they implement their personality, it's all what makes them stand out compared to other kpop boybands (in my opinion). Next to that I'd love to work with Timbaland and Pharrell to create a vibe giving you the throwback Usher 8701 and Justin Timberlake's Justified feelings.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: "Perfection is the killer of your creativity." Don't be too picky during the process, embrace it. Far too often I'm hearing musicians who are looking for the 'perfect song', even though the song is already amazing. Give the song 100% with your current capability and after reviewing the process, give the next song that new 100% with what you've learned. Don't stick to one song for 6 months while you couldn't done 100 in the mean time.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: R&B, Dance, Kpop, Pop, Jpop, Hardstyle, Latin
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Creating harmonies, but also using difference vocal techniques. I enjoy challenging myself by recording a whole boyband song with 6 people. Love the first reaction when people listen to a song and hearing them say: "Was it you doing those different singers AND rappers??"
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Personality, feeling, ambiance, roughness, but also smoothness.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on what the client wants, I mostly start with putting the demo on repeat for some time, so I can get used to the ambiance. After that I'll record the song and send over a very rough demo with dry vocals. If the client likes it, I'll rerecord parts that need more delivery before I sent the vocals back. It's also possible the get the song mixed for a higher rate by my audio engineers.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Rode NT-1A, Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Grew up with the sounds of Usher and Justin Timberlake, but since 2006 kpop stole my heart aswell. Finding the right balance between slow jams, hiphop and the more cinematic kpop songs challenges both my vocal capacity and my writing skills.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I can both write and record full songs, based on my clients' preference. I love sparring with the clients in what they want and being able to fulfill in their needs is what drives me to give my best.
