Interview with Kate L. Malone
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I write with country artists and produce songs for other country songwriters. In Nashville, your track has to sound just as good as what's already on the radio to prove that it can be successful at radio. People want to hear a track that competes at the highest level with what's already out.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Always include a worktape so the producer can hear the starting point of your song. Don't worry about quality...we're trained to hear past that!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been producing music for 10 years. I was able to "quit my day job" and produce music full time 3 years ago.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is essentially the "Wild Country" playlist on Spotify.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that an automatic pitch correction tool can replace targeted pitch adjustment by a professional.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never stop learning.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on country artists, pop artists, and singer/songwriter music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my strongest skill is understanding how to edit vocals from a singer's point of view. I am a vocalist myself, and that helps me to know the difference between what is a stylistic choice on a singer's part and what's just a weak note. Anyone can just lock everything to a pitch or time grid, but that would destroy a lot of what makes a performance unique. "Artistic Correction" is key.
