Endorse Justin DoeI have been working with Justin on my own songs and he has been great! He is very passionate about music and caring about the recording process. He is intuitive when listening and discussing a musical ideas. Songs that I have written and recorded are lifted to another level because Justin has been involved in the arrangement, tracking, editing, mixing and mastering process. It sure is great to have a nice guy like Justin, who is a great musician in his own right, help me with my music.
Interview with Justin Doe
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm proud of the first EP my old band recorded, "Don't Act So Strange" by Left Hand Shakes. I've worked on a lot since then but that was the project that got the ball rolling!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at the moment
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to communicate and to do my best to deliver a high quality product. If you aren't completely satisfied I offer a 100% money back guarantee.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I usually get asked about alternate takes for songs, which I am happy to do!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Kris Bradley of Boomfox Productions, Chromeo, Cory Wong, John Mayer, and Rabea Massad
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Every song is like a puzzle and it's so much fun putting the pieces together to hear the final result.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I think a lot of people who don't do music and aren't involved in the industry don't realize that music production can be a full time job.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I typically ask for what services they're interested in, if they have reference tracks, and what their budget is.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: A reference track or voice memo of what you're looking for goes a long way. Communication is key!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Guitar, microphone, Apollo interface, computer, and a midi keyboard. That'd pretty much cover all the bases.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: After graduating with a music performance degree from CU Denver, I performed live with different bands and taught music lessons. I've been producing and recording since 2020 when the pandemic shut down most of the live performing opportunities.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I lean towards rock but am heavily rooted in jazz, funk, blues, and a bit of country.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Sing your parts! If you can sing through an idea it makes the workflow much faster.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I try to be a musical chameleon, I am strong at adapting to different genres.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Because of my experience playing multiple styles, I am able to arrange and compose parts that may cross into other genres.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For a full production I typically start with the guitar or drum groove. I like to find the feel of the song from the get go. From there I work in the bass and then layer in other sounds that are fitting for the song.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on producing an album for my band The Heavy Pour. I am also producing an album for a solo artist named Fondale.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I like a combination of both. Digital gives a lot more flexibility at the press of a button than what analog does. I am a firm believer in "if it sounds good, then it is good" and digital plugins more often than not sound pretty great. That being said I love the feel of live instruments. The feeling of cranking a guitar amp up and putting a mic on it is just awesome and can lead to a better or different kind of performance. Each have their place!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Chromeo. I love the groove and catchiness of their songs and find their workflow in the studio really natural and inspiring.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I love working on rock, indie, and funk music!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home studio made up of an iMac Pro and Apollo Twin Interface. For guitars/bass I use an EVH 5150iii amp and a Marshall cab loaded with Celestion Creambacks. I also use a Two Notes Torpedo Captor X for cab sims when recording DI. I primarily use Logic Pro with Neural DSP, Slate Digital, Arturia, Output Arcade, and UAD plugins. I've got an array of electric and acoustic guitars, electric basses, as well as a cello and upright bass.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Session guitar recording makes up the majority of the work I currently do.
