Interview with Keylan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I made a song titled "F***ed Up". I Mixed and Mastered it, shot the video and edited it by myself. It currently sits at around 500k views on youtube and even more streams that that across other platforms. It is my first semi-viral moment and it makes me excited to keep working hard for my goals.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on my first studio album.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I do not personally know any other service provider on SoundBetter but I have looked through the providers and there is some real talent here. Just make sure you do your research and you will be fine.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I mix analog and digital all the time. Something just sound better analog and on the other hand work flow is faster digitally. Mixing the two together always yields the best results, for me.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to provide professional service and quality work.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I am creating and perfecting art work. Art work that will be here now and when I am gone. My work isn't just work. Its my legacy.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What is my turn around time. My answer is always, "It spends on the project".

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception i think it that engineers just push a few faders up and down and thats it. There is a real science to what I do for a living and I find that most people think it is just not that complicated.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are they looking for in their project? Is it sound, loudness, clarity or something else? I like to know exactly what the client needs so I know what to deliver.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Do your research. Whole I may be cheaper than some people on prices, others may be better equipped for your style. Make sure you know who you are hiring before tour hire someone. An investment into a mixing engineer is an investment into yourself and you have to make sure you are maximizing your return.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A Mic, An Interface, My Laptop, Water and Food

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started music when I was 12. Thats when my mother invested in my first studio. Since then I have been developing myself as an artist bit here recently, thanks to my schooling, I have been taking on more of a mentor role and helping other artist develop their own sound. I am looking to start my own local label here in Arkansas to help under recognized artist build careers.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I am a very chill person. I like to work on meaningful music and my style of mixing can help bring emotion to projects I work on.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with NF. The versatility he brings to the hip hop landscape is impressive and would be a nice challenge to have.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Having a fundemtal understanding of music theory should be a must learn for all music producers. That and EQ techniques can make or break any artist. I think those are the 2 most important parts of and music production.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I have a history with Hip Hop/Rap music but have worked in various genres. I won't kid around and say I'm the greatest at all genres. If you are looking for electronic music engineers your money may be spent better with someone more seasoned in that field. I shine in rap, county, jazz and rock.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is vocals. I have a knack for cleaning up vocals and making them stand out, bringing new life to every project.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: When customers decide to do business with me they are deciding to get professional quality and customer service. They get quick turn around times and great prices. With me, customers get a college educated professional who works very hard to provide the best service.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start with making sure everything is tracked correctly and then start with some basic EQ. It depends on the project but lets say I have everything layed out and nothing mixed. I will start with the instruments. Making sure they are clear, compressed, noise gated and Eq'd. After that I start the blending process and begin making room for each instrument to live in the song without competing for space. After that, its time to perfect the vocals and then re-blend the track. This is a gross over simplification of the process but it lays out the important aspects of my process.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a professional studio space that I have built over the last 5 years. It includes 2 control surfaces. An Avid S3 Eucon and a Behringer X-Touch control. It is also outfitted with a Neumann u87 microphone and an Apollo Twin X Duo interface. My studio has the latest DAW's like Protools, Logic Pro and Ableton. I have a few analog compressors and preamplifiers with other miscellaneous equipment like keyboards and professional monitors.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: There are many people that I look to for inspiration but my college professors will always be the most inspirational to me! They are the heros that help create music professionals and without them I would never have gotten a lot of the opportunities that I have.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I provide remote mixing & mastering services. This includes vocal tuning, timing and track arrangement.
