Interview with Aaron Shuker
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is efficiency, determination and maturity when working with and for clients. I will always do my best to achieve your desired results and always put yourself before me.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: As a musician, I like to understand what the artist is trying to achieve- is it a story? is it a piece about romance? etc, I like to let the song speak to me, for when it does, I believe that my work compliments the piece. This has helped me achieve enough discernment to know what works in a song and what does not.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I have for some strange reason always been handed Logic Pro projects... So what I will do is to remove all of the plugins and export all of the tracks as audio files, create a new Pro Tools session and import the files for editing and mixing. I have a very minor case of ocd, so everything is edited, track types are colour coded (thanks Dupont), and arranged in a way that is practical and efficient. I will then listen to the song a fair few times and mix according to the song not what I want to hear
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a reasonably humble setup, I wish I had all the money in the world to throw at audio gear, but at the same time I have learnt to use the tools that I have. I use a Pro Tools HD2 system utilising Pro Tools 10 HD. I am using Presonus Eris E5 monitors and also studio headphones (for the late nights). There seems to be an unending abundance of plug-ins- some of which I am still yet to discover, however some favourites to mention would be the Waves API bundle, CLA bundle and also the Joe Meek SC2 Compressor
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a child I was always inspired by the Bee Gees, now, I am inspired by many musicians and production professionals ranging from Dream Theater to Van Morrison. A couple of notable production inspirations to me are Fab Dupont and Graham ("from recordingrevolution.com")
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Editing, mixing and mastering are the major jobs I do for my clients. I have also recorded drum tracks when required, I find this really exciting as I love to watch and be part of artists' creative spark, watching ideas turn into final pieces that they love and are proud of.
