Kenny Powerz on SoundBetter

I mix & master all types of music, coming from an electronic background of production - I use interesting techniques that push the boundaries of “textbook” do's & don't's.

I offer services in Mix & Mastering, Ghost Production, Co-Production and Sound Design.

My career in music began as a DJ, the love for various types of music grew with the interests I had which led me to leave the everyday working life and apply for a Diploma in Audio Engineering at SAE in Auckland (NZ). From tertiary, I moved onto freelance Audio work alongside personal performance ventures. Today, I'm moving forward with a more "Studio" focus in music, my interests lie within the foundations of composition/production/mix & mastering with no bias towards the genre.

My composition strengths lie in electronic music with a strong ability to compose music through the use of live instruments and digital synthesis. Please view my Show-Reel for an example of my versatility. I look forward to working with you on YOUR project!

Kenny is a MONSTER. I constantly come at him with projects ranging from classical piano to future bass and hip hop and he delivers every single time. One of the most important characteristics of a good producer is that they are able to not only create, but also understand what is being asked of them. This guy is so well acquainted with countless styles that he is bound to capture what sound the artist is going for and deliver it.

Interview with Kenny Powerz

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm currently working on a "Nu-Metal" EP for a band I recently joined, it's very different but it's the experimental element that I love.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital - Cheaper & Ever developing but also more experimental.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: To deliver to THEIR highest standard, not just mine.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: It's a passion as well as a job for me. I'm thankful for every day I get to work on music for a living!

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That it's all the same. No project is the same, the process changes regularly.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: Can you describe where you see the finished product? How long would you expect this project to take? Are you happy for me to take charge and possibly evolve your sound?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Exchange a conversation about musical interests before talking business, It's good to develop an understanding of possible contrasting views before work begins.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I began as a DJ, Although I had music production experience, It wasn't solidified. After a couple of years of DJing part-time, I decided to go and study Audio Engineering at SAE Institute. It was prior to my education that I started to build my career in the professional field of audio.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Heavy-hitting but Dynamic

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: Hans Zimmer - He's amazing, the way he connects music and emotion is phenomenal.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Don't be a follower, the more you focus on following someone else - the longer it'll take for you to find your own unique sound.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Electronic Pop/House, Future Bass, Trap and as of recently - Metal.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: I'd have to say that's a tie between Mix & Mastering alongside Electronic Music Production.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: Honestly, That's hard to say. I like to think I bring a very unique perspective, I'm not driven by certain "facts" or "techniques" - I have a more "freelance" view on things.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: Generally, my process is made apparent once I've reviewed what needs to be done. On a creative project that may need sound design or foundation work, I listen and act on what pops out the most. Mix & Mastering is a uniform process, I work through projects methodically to achieve the desired sound.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: I work from a home studio. I mix/master/produce off a 2:1 system, 2 x 8" Monitors & 10" Sub all wired to a Mackie BigKnob Studio. Although there are quite a few instruments around the room, I wouldn't say it's "big" - there's always room to go bigger.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Hans Zimmer, Flume, Calvin Harris, Zedd, Madeon......That list is never-ending!

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: Audio Mix & Mastering, Co-Production and General Audio Edits/Comp'ing.
