I am a professional songwriter, session vocalist and musician player from New Zealand and now based in LA. I've had a long career as an artist, a session musician/vocalist both in the studio and live. I compose for film & TV and have numerous placements on commercials, TV shows & films. I'd love to hear about your next project.
Hi! I've been playing and writing my whole life and have been lucky enough to travel the world and work with amazing people. I grew up playing classical and pop music and went on to study jazz at University.
My own project is under my name 'Lisa Crawley' which is in the indie pop realm and have been a part of projects across a variety of styles (country, r&b, rock, soul, theatre etc).
I work as a piano player and session vocalist on a full-time basis and you can hear my voice and songs on such commercials as Microsoft, Oxfam, various films, and some of your favourite TV shows. Recent placements include TV shows 'Devil in Ohio', 'Good Trouble', 'Proven Innocent' and 'Nancy Drew'. I have experience arranging strings, synths, horns (I play clarinet) and love arranging vocals and backing vocals.
My songs have had placements in numerous official Spotify Playlists such as New Music Friday, The Picnic List, Unwind, The Office Stereo, Alt Here, Indie Arrivals, Fresh Finds Indie, Slo Down (and many more!). My last five singles were featured on Apple's New Music Daily Playlist.

The Best. - check_circleVerified
Well...very simple. Lisa is the best. Lisa always comes up with great lyrics and great ideas and puts herself at the service of the song to sublimate it. She will always give the little extra that makes the difference.

Lisa took my demo and blessed it 100x over. She provided stronger lyrics and enhanced the melody, then offered various ideas on how to move forward on the song. Working with Lisa is a chance to work with an artist who understands the complexities of writing music, and offers her knowledge and expertise to help you make the best decisions for your music.

Interview with Lisa C
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their merits! Analog (Vinyl) sounds more alive, more dynamic, more "nuanced". Digital has more bass and a little more detailed high frequencies...I am a sucker for the vintage sound but every project is different!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently scored a series called 'Ex Sisters-In-Law'. I love writing music to picture and how music can bring so much to a story.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The feeling when someone is over the moon with their song and getting to be a part of that!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: My rates (which are on my profile), if they can release the song and how to go about getting it out to the world - I try to be as helpful and encouraging as possible and share my knowledge of being a self managed artist in the music industry as well as an experienced musician.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who are your influences? What is your vocal range? Will this be used for commercial release? What are your goals and plans for the track?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Do your homework and research who you are hiring to make sure they're the best match for your project! Don't be scared to ask specific questions, most of us are very happy to go the extra mile to make sure you're comfortable and excited about us working with you on your project!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My third full length album. Scoring a web series. Recent singles under my own name (Lisa Crawley) include 'See Me Soon', 'Show You What Love Is' and 'Clear History'.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Mark Rudin and Rob Kleiner are both brilliant producers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I understand how important and personal these projects can be to clients - I'll be sure to bring my best to your project as if it were my own!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Sometimes people don't realise that I am a versatile musician who has arranged music for orchestras, strings, brass and woodwind!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An acoustic piano (providing I didn't have to carry it), my Suzuki Q-chord, my little Martin guitar, clarinet and a voice recorder to get down those ideas!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music has been a lifelong passion, I've been doing it professionally for 17 years now and can't imagine anything doing else!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Vocally - Indie/pop with a soulful edge. Musically, I have experience across all genres as a session musician - pop, rock, honky tonk, jazz etc!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Lana Del Rey - I love her production style, insightful lyrics and arrangements
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It's about the notes you don't play as well as the ones that you do!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: All sorts! A lot of lyrics and music for singer songwriters, quirky indie pop, ballads and soul/r&b
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Playing by ear, creating a song that's interesting while remaining accessible to audiences.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A combination of years of experience with a fresh approach! Catchy and memorable melodies. Musicality and clever, insightful lyrics.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Find out what each client wants - no job is the same! Research their influences and any material they provide before starting. Then depending on the job I'll put pen to paper or load up a session in Logic and start creating melodies!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a Neve Preamp Avalon Compressor, a Universal Audio Compressor and a U87, U89 & 103 and Joemeek condensor mic selection. I primarily use Logic Audio and have a Nord Electro 6D and an upright piano.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My tastes are very ecclectic, I'm inspired both musically and production wise by The Beatles, Sia, Michael Kiwanuka, Sara Bareilles and Jon Brion
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My most common work is writing lyrics, vocal melody and the music (piano/chords).
I was the Songwriter, vocalist and played piano, organ, clarinets and omnichords in this production
