Jacob Violet on SoundBetter

With a master’s from Berklee NYC and credits with Ableton, BandLab, and rising alt-pop artists, I craft records that feel both forward-thinking and emotionally grounded. Whether you’re building a bold new sonic world or tightening a nearly-finished mix, I’ll help bring your vision into focus.

Hey! I’m Jacob Violet, a producer, songwriter, and mixing engineer based in NYC.
I specialize in emotionally driven, electronically inspired music that blends distorted textures, tight toplines, and experimental sound design. If you’re into bold ideas, glitchy beauty, or left-of-center pop, let’s talk.

I hold a Master’s in Songwriting & Production from Berklee NYC, where I honed my approach to worldbuilding through sound. My collaborators range from underground artists to brands like Ableton and BandLab, and I’m passionate about helping others carve out a sound that feels honest, clear, and new.

Whether you’re starting with a rough demo or need someone to finalize production/mix, I bring a detail-oriented, collaborative process to every project. I work primarily in Ableton and Pro Tools and love material with unique identity and vision.

✨ I’m currently offering introductory pricing on SoundBetter to connect with new artists here. My normal rates are higher, so this is a great chance to get professional-level production and mixing at a reduced cost.

Let’s make something that cuts through.

Interview with Jacob Violet

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of was taking a rough demo from an artist and turning it into a fully realized dark pop/electronic track. The original idea was just a simple vocal and chords, and my role was to build the entire production: drums, bass, sound design, arrangement, vocal editing, and the final mix. I loved this project because the artist had a clear emotional vision but didn’t know how to bring the world of the song to life. Watching it transform into something modern, textured, and powerful, and seeing their reaction was incredibly rewarding.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now I’m working on a mix of dark-pop and electronic projects for a few independent artists, plus some ongoing production work where I’m turning demos into full songs. I’m also developing new sound design ideas on my MS-20 and Prophet 600 for upcoming projects. I like keeping a balance between client work and creative experimentation so everything stays fresh.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Kurt Beeten is a great mixing and mastering engineer if they need a second set of ears on a track!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both, I use analog for character and digital for precision. Analog synths like my MS-20 and Prophet 600 give me raw texture, grit, and movement you can’t quite fake. Digital tools (Ableton, plugins, sound design devices) let me shape, clean, and polish things exactly the way the song needs. The combination gives me the warmth and personality of analog with the flexibility and speed of digital... the best of both worlds.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is that I’ll treat your song with the same care and intention I give my own work. I’ll listen closely to your vision, match your references, communicate clearly, and make sure the production feels modern, cohesive, and emotionally true to you. I won’t stop refining the track until it feels right.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I like most is helping artists turn a rough idea into a full, modern production that feels like “them.” There’s something really satisfying about taking a demo or voice memo, understanding the emotion behind it, and building a world around it with sound design, atmosphere, and low-end movement. Seeing an artist get excited about their own song again is the best part of the job.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most people ask: “Can you match this reference?” My answer is yes, matching vibe, energy, and sound design direction is one of my strengths. I’ll study your references, identify what makes them work (bass movement, atmosphere, groove, texture), and build something that feels in the same world while still being original to you.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that producers just “add a beat” or polish a demo. In reality, a lot of the work is understanding the artist’s vision, designing sounds from scratch, shaping the low end, building atmosphere, tightening arrangements, and making sure everything emotionally supports the vocal. It’s a lot more world-building and problem solving than people expect.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask a few key questions to understand your vision: - What are your top 2–3 reference tracks for vibe, energy, and mix? - Do you have a demo, voice memo, or any existing production? - Are there any specific sounds, textures, or moments you want included? - How polished do you want the final result (production only, production + mix, full release-ready)? These help me understand the exact world you want the song to live in so I can build something that fits perfectly.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone whose style genuinely matches the mood you’re going for, and make sure they’re easy to communicate with. Production is a collaborative process, and the best results happen when you feel comfortable sharing references, ideas, and feedback. If you’re working in dark pop or electronic pop, choose a producer who understands low-end movement, atmosphere, and modern sound design, those details make a huge difference in the final result.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I had to narrow it down to five essential pieces of gear on a desert island, I’d take: - Ableton Live: my main creative brain. - Korg MS-20: unbeatable for gritty basses and textures. - Prophet 600: warm, emotional poly sounds. - A great audio interface: clean, fast, reliable. - A good pair of headphones (like HD650s or similar): because monitoring matters more than anything when you’re stranded. This combo gives me a full palette: bass, atmosphere, lush chords, clean capture, and accurate listening.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been producing for almost a decade. I started out making electronic music in high school, then began writing, producing, and mixing for my own band. That eventually led me to working with other artists, studying Songwriting & Production at Berklee, and building a freelance career focused on dark pop and modern electronic production. Over the years I’ve worked across a wide range of genres, but dark pop and electronic pop have become my main lane.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is modern dark pop with a strong electronic edge... emotional vocals, textured synths, punchy low end, and clean, high-impact production. I blend atmospheric sound design with pop sensibility so the tracks feel both cinematic and catchy. Think moody, polished, and forward-thinking.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with artists who live in that cinematic, gritty, emotional electronic space... people like The Dare, The Hellp, Charli XCX, Arca, or Gesaffelstein. They build whole worlds with sound, and that’s the kind of production I gravitate toward. I feel like my low-end instincts and atmospheric textures would slot perfectly into those universes.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: A great bass production tip is to add subtle harmonic enhancement to help the bass cut through without getting muddy. Tools like Ableton’s Corpus (Kick Tight) or a SubSynth-style harmonic generator can add upper harmonics that make basslines feel more present, textured, and consistent across different speakers. It’s a small move that can make a huge difference in modern pop and electronic mixes.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on dark pop, electronic pop, club-leaning pop, and moody alternative electronic music. A lot of my projects mix emotional vocals with modern sound design, punchy low-end, and atmospheric textures. I also work across pop, indie electronic, and experimental styles depending on what the artist is aiming for.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is blending natural pop sensibility with really strong bass-focused sound design. I’ve been told I have an instinctive feel for how low-end, drums, and textures should move to support the emotion of the song. That combination lets me take a simple demo and turn it into a dark, modern, and polished production that still feels catchy and accessibl

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a modern, emotional, and high-impact electronic sensibility to every song. My focus is on creating unique textures, punchy drums, clean vocal work, and atmosphere that supports the emotion of the track. Whether I’m building a full production or polishing what’s already there, I make sure the song feels cohesive, current, and release-ready without losing the artist’s original intent.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My typical process starts with getting clear on your vision and references. Once I understand the vibe you’re going for, I’ll build the core production or polish the demo you send... laying down drums, synths, textures, and structure. From there, I’ll tighten the arrangement, edit/align vocals if needed, and send frequent updates so we stay aligned. After that, I move into mixing, fine-tuning the dynamics, atmosphere, and low end until everything feels cohesive and release-ready. Revisions are always part of the process, I like making sure the track ends exactly where you want it.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My home setup is intentionally clean and focused. I run a Korg MS-20 and a Prophet 600 through a Quantum 2626 interface, with everything routed for fast, creative workflow and high-quality capture. I keep things minimal so I can work quickly and dial in custom synth textures without getting lost in gear. If a project needs a larger studio environment, I’m always happy to book a pro space in LA for additional tracking, mixing, or sound design.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by producers and artists who blend emotional songwriting with bold, modern electronic production, people like Flume, Gesaffelstein, Arca, The Dare, The Hellp, Justice, and SOPHIE. I gravitate toward creators who build atmosphere, tension, and unique sonic identities, and who push electronic pop into new territory.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common work I do is taking a rough demo and turning it into a polished, modern dark-pop or electronic production. That usually includes building the full instrumental, designing custom synths and textures, tightening the arrangement, aligning/tuning vocals, and delivering a clean, punchy mix that’s streaming-ready. I specialize in moody pop, electronic, and club-leaning styles with emotional impact and high-fidelity sound.
