Anthony Sylvester on SoundBetter

Groove guitarist (Funk / Neo-Soul / Indie Funk / Nu Funk / Disco) with credits including: Rolling Stone, Glastonbury Festival, BBC Radio 6, Channel 4

Hey! I am a session guitarist based in Liverpool in love with everything funky. My promise is to offer you groovy, rhythmical guitar parts with jazzy harmony that suit your song. It can be anything from Frusciante style aggressive skank to more subtle James Brown style guitar parts. In my own music I like to infuse an indie element to my playing with more ambient parts so that can be discussed if you want that style included too.

Writing credits include Rolling Stone magazine, BBC Radio 6 and UK national television.

My goal is to provide grooving parts that have purpose and feel to them, that means it could be a screaming lead or the most subtle bubble part, anything to make your song pop.

I have released over 8 records under the alias 'Slye' in which I did all the guitar playing and have also played guitars on records for many other artists. As a live musician I have performed on tours around the UK including Glastonbury.

For my guitar gear I mainly record through my Neural Quad Cortex with boutique captures into an Apollo X4 using Unison enabled Neve pre amps. I also have a large selection of guitars so we can absolutely nail the tone you are looking for.

Check out my showreel in the audio to see my style, every sound heard on the showreel was recorded in my studio. I have high quality video gear so can include a performance video too!

Please fellow with a knowledge of what he wants. What I found refreshing is his use of musician terminology that was easy to navigate. LOVED the use of a well structured PDF showing change requests. Let's work again shall we? :-)

I've been working with Anthony for the last year and he's been nothing but funky, groovy, tight and the easiest to work with. His sounds and quality for the recordings are always top notch. Always reliable and always the best fun! Highly recommend to anyone looking for any guitar work.

Collaborated and recorded with Anthony a number of times. He's a very talented guitarist (among other instruments) and has a great setup in the studio for recording. Very capable of working to creative briefs and brings a lot of expertise and unique ideas to the table for production and songwriting. Would definitely recommend working with him :)

Interview with Anthony Sylvester

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The live EP I released with 'Slye'. It was an 8 piece band with 3 piece horn section all recorded live and filmed in a venue in Liverpool. I wrote all the instrument parts for this session.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Taking clients ideas and turning them into a reality.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Really consider what your song needs. I love to play big, outrageous guitar riffs, but is that really what will make your song come to life?

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: My acoustic guitar, tube amp, Gibson SG, Fuzz pedal, mobile phone to call for help

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I've been playing guitar for over 16 years and I've been professional releasing music for 9.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: If Prince walked into a (alcohol free!) bar and sat down with Mark Letteri and Cory Wong and was then served by Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: L'imperitrice! I think they have achieved an amazing blend of groove, emotion and soundscape and would love to spend some time picking their brains.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Vari-Speed! You can get some really cool sounds playing around with this feature.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Funk, Neo Soul, Indie Jazz, Indie Soul, Disco

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Listening!

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Purposeful guitar. Whether that's a solo or a one note groove, it's all equally important.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: Discussing the brief with the client to really understand what they are after. I'll then run a few takes to see what flows and once I've got a few solid ideas down I'll get them onto the wax and send it across!

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I run a Universal Audio Apollo X4 into my upgraded M1 Mac. I typically use my Neural DSP Quad Cortex captures into Neve preamps to achieve warm but bright guitar tones.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Prince, Mark Lettieri, Cory Wong, Parcels, L'imperitrice

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Groovy guitar parts that lock in with the arrangement to really make the song pop/
