Chips "Vegas Chips" Weldon on SoundBetter

I custom tailor the mix to fit the vibe of the song. A lot of people can get you a balanced mix, but I want to have people FEEL the song. I accomplish this through frequency manipulation, automations, and various other methods.

Over 15 years experience in the music business (engineering, producing, indie label exec.) I know what a great mix should sound like. Give me an opportunity to take your music to the next level.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

I had a project I was working on with a vocalist from a different country and so we had to work remotely. I couldn't record her so the quality of vocals I got weren't great at all. It was done with a horrible mic. I sent the project to Chips and he did a more than excellent job at making the vocals from a cheap mic sound more than passable. And he did an excellent job with the instrumental too. I highly recommend him.

Interview with Chips "Vegas Chips" Weldon

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Vegas Chips "No Looking Back" I wrote the lyrics, preformed, mixed, marketed and directed the music video. So, my hand were full but I enjoy larger projects like this.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A personal EP (Vegas Chips), some mixing and mastering for a young talented client Ja$e and music business consulting.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Hybrid

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love taking an idea and bringing it to life at its full sonic potential.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That there's a one size fits all approach or that somehow plug-in presets do the work for us.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: 1. What do you actually need? Stem mixing/mastering, a full track out mix and master, or just a master of your current stereo mix? 2. If working with Stems or a full track out, how many total tracks? 3. How fast do you need it back? 4. Name of song? 5. Artist(s) and Producer(s) name including features (this gives me the info I need to embed data in your music)

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Ask questions! I am honest and upfront, but a lot of people are not. So, make sure you know what you are getting, what it exaclty includes and are there any other charges or fees you should know about.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: ATC SCM 25's, iMac Pro 10 core, WES Audio ngCompressor, UA Apollo X8 and Chandler Limited REDD Mic

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I started as an artist/songwriter, which led me into the recording process. I started taking some recording gigs and I was getting consistent compliments on my pre mixes and I couldn't find anyone who I felt would mix my music the way I hear it, and if they could do it I realized I couldn't afford their rates at the time, so I delve head first into the mixing process. Which I've now been doing over 15 years. Over time my understanding of mastering grew, I started doing some basic masters for myself and clients, but as my love and understanding grew I went into full fledge mastering. At which point I started purchasing more outboard, mastering gear.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Big, open, clean and polished.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, Alternative

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Stem Mastering

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I can bring a song to its full sonic potential and ensure translation across systems and streaming platforms.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My studio consists of a new iMac Pro 10-core, UA Apollo X8, UA La-2a, Dangerous Dbox +, WES Audio ngCompressor, Bettermaker Mastering Limiter, Bricasti M7 Reverb and more. For monitoring I have ATC SCM 25a's, Avantone CLA10a, Genelec 8010 AP-2's, AirPods, Earbuds, Beats by DRE and Sennheiser HD280 Headphones.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Serban Ghenea -Mixing Tom Coyne- Msstering

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: I prefer stem mixing/mastering, full tracked out mixes, mixing vocals over a stereo beat track. I have also done audio restoration for both music and video projects.
