Interview with Chase Aaron

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Right now I'm working on a 5-song psychedelic rock EP called Lover's Peak. I did all the production on the album. It has strong R&B influences and a lot of ethereal elements that were really fun to arrange and mix.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: There's a songwriter by the name of Lovsky on here. She writes amazing lyrics. The way she uses imagery and emotionally descriptive words really pulls on your heart strings. She's also a helluva vocalist.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Prepare a reference to show as an example of what you're looking for and please for the love of God, include the key and BPM in the file name of your track!

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: My guitar, laptop, hard drive, headphones and a midi controller.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: Music has always been my path. The entirety of it, truthfully. Not just production and engineering. I'm an independent recording artist, too. The demo song on my profile is one of my originals. Truthfully, I picked up my skills as a producer/engineer out of necessity.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Unorthodox. I just don't do things by the book. I like to combine influences from things that don't go hand in hand to create something that works really well. For example, I'll take a sample from a Nirvana record and interpolate it so I can use it for an R&B song. It has worked really well for me so far.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I have three. Moses Sumney, because he's a vocal genius and his range is otherworldy. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala because the guy does everything and I just wanna be a part of that. Finally, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. I think that speaks for itself.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Yeah, hit that 'Save' after every couple changes or you'll be sorry.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I work on an array of genres but mostly R&B and Indie music. I produce and mix rap records whenever they come my way because they're fun, but I get really serious about the R&B & Indie stuff.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My ear.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I like to make sure I bring warmth, movement and texture to a song. Of course it's important to me that all of the elements mesh and that vocals sit in the pocket blah blah blah. However, what's most important to me is that the music feels immersive and multidimensional. My sounds and textures are meant to create a state of flow that pulls the listener into the world of the performer.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: It's a pretty modest setup. Your typical midi controller, iMac desktop running Logic Pro X and to most of my clients' surprise, I use mostly stock plugins to achieve my sound. I have the Adam Audio T7v monitors which are really well balanced in the EQ department. I mix with them for both vocals and instrumental tracks.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Sonically, I'm inspired by Prince, Stevie Wonder, Mike Dean and Kurt Cobain. It's the combination of analog synths, moogs and electric guitars for me. Stevie's progressions and modulations are untouchable, most of the guitar progressions I play are inspired by my favorite Nirvana album and Mike Dean's mixing style is all about bass and complimenting the arrangement. I pull a lot from him in my production and mixing process.
