I am a French mixing & recording engineer based in Paris. After 3 years as a junior engineer at the renowned "Studio de la Seine" and learning from the some of the best in the industry, I started my own adventure 4 years ago at the French Theory Studio where I was able to fully express myself with many gifted artists.

I have a dedicated mix/master suite with select hardware from companies like Manley, Universal Audio, and extensive software and plugins, all centered around a greatly tuned room and Adam 3 ways monitors.

Interview with Benjamin Lagadec

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My first certification will always be the best. It made me feel so proud and has been the first major turn of event in my career. It also gave me the confidence I needed at the time.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: After I receive the files, I will prep the session and get it on my calendar, or let the client know if there's something missing or that needs to be fixed. I get a first pass to clients typically about a 3 days later, and then if they have notes I address as needed.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: YOU have your own taste and secret weapons. Don't bypass all the creative effect ( saturation, chorus, pitch, etc) your record needs to keep its identity thinking the engineer will make them anyway. Keep them. I will let you know anyway if I need a dry version of anything.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: If I had to choose I would say digital. Nothing can beat fast paced execution in a creative process. Especially since software emulation of analog gear is actualy great nowadays.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That engineers are alchemists... The better the material the better the mix! :)

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: Who do you want to buy your record. It is by far the most important thing to consider and can greatly influence my work.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: My laptop and my workflow... great workflow give you better record than any expensive analog setup. Expensive analog setup is cool though...

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Do not over produce! Great song and great mixes come from carefully crafted arrangements.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Making vocals thrive in a busy mix. You will feel them in your eyeball :D

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I make your ideas and creative decisions competitive. Translate your record in a natural way to be felt by your audience as you felt it when you made it.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I have a dedicated mix/master suite with select hardware from companies like Manley, Universal Audio, and extensive software and plugins, all centered around a greatly tuned room and Adam 3 ways monitors.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I like definition, separation between elements, I make everything fit in their own place so the vocal can thrive.
